I 32 ORDINANCE NO., 159. ~, I I ;y(-, IE; AN ORDINANCE OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY OF AR- CADIA RELATING TO "SCHOOL STOPS" AND "BOULEVARD STOPS", IND PROVID~ ING A PENALTY FOR THE VIOLATION THEREOF. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: ' SEOTION 1: The City Marshal. of said City of Arcadia is hereby authorized and directed to cause a metallic or other sign bearing on the face thereof the word "stop" in letters not less than three inches in height and of a different color from the rest of said metallic or other sign, to be placed in any public Street or Avenue leading into any Main Artery of traffic when, in the opin ion of said Board of Trustees, the traffic or travel upon such Main Artery is unusually heavy and when, in its opinion, as evidenced by a Resolution adopted at any regular meeting of said Board of Trus- tees and entered upon the minutes of any such meeting, it is nec- essary for the safety and convenience of traffic, that vehicles about to enter such Main Artery of traffic,come to a full stop be- fore so doing. It shall be unlawful for any person driving or pro- pelling any automobile or other vehicle, to drive or propel the same or cause the same to be driven or propelled, into any Main Artery of traffic from any Street or Avenue in which said metallic or 0 ther sign bearing the word "Stop. has been installed and is clearly indicated as hereto-,: provided without first bringing such automobile or other vehicle toa complete stop before reaching the said sign bearing th~ word .Stop. and then ascertaining that the condition of the traffic upon such Main Artery of traffic is such that said automobile or other vehicle can be driven orpropelled wit safety upon such Main Artery of traffic. SECTION 2: The City Marshal of said Oity of Arcadia is hereby authorized and directed to place and maintain cross-walks at the intersections of such Streets and Avenues in the vicinity of public schools in said City of Arcadia, as may be designated by sai Board of Trustees and at which said Board of Trustees deems the -l~ OdV'Yl~'l1tJ I /S7 ...... ....... 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 u 13 z ~ o ~ 9 :! Such cross-walks shall be indicated and maintained by tuo lines of yellow paint upon the pavement approximately ten (10) feet apart. The said City Marshal is further authorized and directed to place and maintain with yellow paint the words IISchool Crossingll together with an arroVl pointing v in the direction of such cross-walks, said words and arrow to be painted upon the street pavement approximately one hundred (100) feet from each such cross-walk. Within such cross-walk pedestrians engaged in crossing the street shall have the right-of-way over all traffic. It will be unlawful for any person driving any vehicle or animal to drive into any of such cross-walks when there is pass- ing in any such cross-walk a pedestrian engaged in crossing said street upon the right-hand of the roadway. SECTION 3: Any person, firm or corporation violating any of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a mis- demeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $300.00 or by imprisonment in the City Jail of said City of Arcadia for aperiod not exceeding three months or by both such fine and imprisonment. SECTION 4: Thie Ordinance ie required for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health and safety and in parti- cular because there aze certain Uain Arteries or Boulevards within said City of Arcadia upon which the traffic is unusually heavy and where there is great danger to life and limb unless traffic enter- ing thereon comes to a full stop, and an Ordinance regulating traf- fic entering upon such Main Arteries or Boulevards is immediately required. The foregoing Ordinance was adopted at a regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of Arcadia held on the 5th. day of August, 1925, by the affirmative vote of at least four Trus- tees, to-wi t: AYES: Trustees--ff~~ -&L~~ ?/' NOES: None. 3ff~ ABSENT: Trustee and signed and approved this 5th. day of August, 1925. kl~~ ~Sident f the Board f Trustees.
