ORDINANCE NO. 1486
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ARCADIA AMENDING THE BUILDING
CODE TO REQUIRE SPRINKLERS AND STANDPIPES
IN CERTAIN CASES IN GROUP H OCCUPANCIES
(MULTIPLE Dl'iELLINGS AND HOTELS).
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA DOES ORDAIN AS
FOLLOIvS :
SECTION 1. Section 8130.34 is hereby added to the
Arcadia Municipal Code to read as follows:
"8130.34. AMENDMENT. Section 1310, subsection (a) of
Chapter 13 of said Uniform Building Code, Volume I, is hereby
amended to read as follows:
Sec. 1310(a). vfuen required by other provisions of this
Code, automatic fire extinguishing systems and standpipes shall
be installed as specified in Chapter 38."
SECTION 2. Section 8130.35 is hereby added to the
Arcadia Municipal Code to read as follows:
"8130.35. ADDITION. Section 1310 of Chapter 13 of said
Uniform Building Code, Volume I, is hereby amended by adding
thereto a new subsection (b), the same to read as follows:
Sec. 1310 (b). Yard standpipe risers shall be provided
whenever the front entrance to any dwelling unit or guest room is
located more than 150 feet travel distance from the nearest street
curb face. Said standpipe risers shall be so located that no /
front entrance to any dwelling unit or guest room on the premises
is more than 75 feet travel distance from a standpipe riser or
street curb face.
1. Size. The size of the standpipe riser shall be not
less than two (2) inches in diameter. The size of the pipe

supplying the risers shall not be less than tl'lO and one-half
(2t) inches in diameter. The Chief of the Fire Department
may require larger risers or supply piping if, in his opinion,
it is deemed necessary by the configuration of supply pipe
length and number of standpipe risers.
2. Outlets. All standpipe risers shall be equipped
with a one and one-half (It) inch outlet valve. Such valve
shall be located not less than three (3) feet nor more than
four (4) feet above grade.
3. Water supply. Such~tandpipe riser system shall be
wet at all times. Tt~ system shall be supplied from the City
mains. The supply pipe shall not be metered and shall
contain a straight-way check valve.
4. Fire department connections. All standpipe riser
systems shall be equipped with a two-way fire department
connection. Piping from the connection inlet shall connect
to the supply piping on the service side of the supply
piping check valve. All fire department connections shall
be located on a street front not less than eighteen (18)
inches nor more than four (4) feet above grade and shall
be ~quipped with an approved straight-way check valve and
substantial plugs or caps. All fire department connections
shall be protected against mechanical injury and shall
be visible and accessible. More than one fire department
connection may be required.
5. Signs. An approved durable sign with raised letters
at least one (1) inch high shall be permanently attached to
the street fire department connection. Such sign shall read:
'STANDPIPE RISER CONNECTION.'"

SECTION 3. Section 8130.36 is hereby added to the
Arcadia Municipal Code to read as follows:
"8130.36. ADDITION. Section 3802(b) of Chapter 38
of said Uniform Building Code, Volume I, is hereby amended by adding
Paragraph 11 thereto, the same to read as follows:
11. In any garage area of Group :H Occupancies whenever any
portion of said garage area is located beneath any portion of a
dwelling unit or guest room."
SECTION 4. Section 8130.37 is hereby added to the
Arcadia Municipal Code to read as follows:
"8130.37. ADDITION. Section 3802(b) of Chapter 38
of said Uniform Building Code, Volume I, is hereby amended by
adding Paragraph 12 thereto, the same to read as follows:
12. In any garage area of Group H Occupancies whenever
the ceiling of said garage is located less than seven (7) feet
above the adjacent ground level;"
SECTION 5. This is an emergency ordinance necessary
for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety and
shall go into effect upon its adoption. The facts constituting
such necessity are that Group H Occupancies may be constructed
in the City of Arcadia under applicable zoning and building
regulations. Such occupancies present special fire protection
and suppression problems, and in order to meet these problems
and protect the public health and safety it is necessary that
this ordinance take effect immediately.
SECTION 6. The City Clerk shall cert~fy to the
adoption of this ordinance.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing ordinance ',~as adopted
at an adjourned regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
