ORDINANCE NO. 1497
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ARCADIA AMENDING SECTION 8130.35
OF THE ARCADIA MUNICIPAL CODE RELATING
TO THE METHOD' OF INSTALLATION OF YARD
STANDPIPE SYSTEMS FOR MULTIPLE DWELLING
OCCUPANCIES.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA DOES ORDAIN
.AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. Section 8130.35 of the Arcadia Municipal
Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
"8130.35. ADDITION. Section 1310 of Chapter 13 of said
Uniform BUilding Code, Volume I, is hereby amended by adding
thereto a new subsection (b), the same to read as follows:
Sec. 1310 (b). Yard standpipe risers shall be provided
whenever the front entrance to any dwelling unit or guest room is
located more than 150 feet travel distance from the nearest street
curb face, except that such risers shall not be required where
all buildings on the premises are equipped throughout with
automatic fire sprinkler systems 'installed in accordance with
UBC.Standard No. 38-1. Said standpipe risers shall be so located
that no front entrance to any dwelling unit or guest room on the
premises is more than 75 feet travel distance from a standpipe
riser or street curb face.
1. Size. The size of the standpipe riser shall be
not less than two (2) inches in diameter. The size of the pipe
supplying the risers shall not be less than two and one-half (2t)
inches in diameter. The Chief of the Fire Department may require
larger risers Dr supply piping if, in his opinion, it is deemed
necessary by the configuration of supply pipe length and number
of s~andpipe risers.
2. Outlets. All'standpipe risers shall be equipped
with a one and one-half (It)' inch outlet valve with national

standard male hose threads. Such valve shall be located not
less than three (3) feet nor more than four (4) feet above grade.
3. Water supply. Such standpipe riser system shall be
wet at all times and shall be connected to an adequate water
supply. The supply pipe shall contain backflow devices as required
by the Water Department and the Fire Department
4. Fire department connections. All standpipe riser
systems shall be equipped with a two-way fire department connection.
Piping from the connection inlet shall connect to the supply
piping on the service side of the supply piping check valve. All
fire department connections shall be located on a street front or,
if approved by the. Fire Chief, adjacent to a paved access road on
the property. Connections shall be not less than eighteen (18)
inches nor m~re than four (4) feet above grade and shall be
equipped with approved straight-way check valves. All fire depart-
ment connections shall be protected against mechanical injury
and shall be visible and accessible. More than one fire department
connection may be required.
5. Signs. An approved durable sign with raised letters
at least one (1) inch high shall be permanently attached to the
street fire department connection. Such sign shall read:

SECTION 2. This is an emergency ordinance necessary
for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety and
shall go into effect upon its adoption. The facts constituting
such necessity are that this ordinance regulates construction of
multiple-family dwellings which present special fire prevention
and suppression problems, and in order to meet these problems and
protect the public health and safety, it is necessary that this
ordinance take effect immediately. ..

SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the
adoption of this ordinance.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing ordinance was
adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
Arcadia held on the 16th day of October

affirmative vote of at least three Councilmen, to wit:
