[\ AN ORDInANCE OF THE CITY COm!CIL OF 'l'HE :;rTY OF ARC;lDIA
FORBIDDING PEDDLERS AND SOLICITORS FROM RINGING BELLS OR KNOCKING
ON DOORS OF PF:r:::i,uSES mIERE SIGNS FORBIDDING THE CALLING OF PEDDLERS
OR SOLIOITORS ARE POSTED.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA DOES ORDAIN
AS FOLLOI'IS:
~'ION 1. It shall be unlawful for any peddler, selling
or pretending to sell, or offering for sale, or demonstrating ~oods,
wares or merctandise of any kind or character, or any article,
material or substance, to ring the bell, or knock on the door of
any residence, dwelling, flat, or apartment whereon a siGn bear-
ing the words "No Peddlers" is painted or affixed or exposed to
pUblic view, or to attempt to ~ain admittance thereto.
It shall be unlawful for any solicitor selling or pretend-
ing to sell, or offerin~ for sale, or demonstrating or taking orders
for, or soliciting orders for f,oods, wares or merchandise of any
kind or character, or any article, material or substance, to ring
the bell, or knock on the d~or of any residence, dwelling, flat
or apartment whereon a si:;n bearing the words "No Solicitors" is
painted or affixed or exposed to public view, or to attempt to
gain admittance thereto.
It shall be unlawful for any peddler or solicitor selling,
or pretending to sell, or offering for sale, or demonstrating or
taking orders for, or soliciting orders for, goods, wares or
merchandise of any kind or character, or any article, material or
substance, to ~in~ the bell, or knock on the door of any residence,
dwelling, flat or apartment whereon a sign bearing the words "No
Peddlers Or Solicitors," or words of similar import indicating that
peddlers or solicitors are not wanted on said premises is painted or
af:rixed or exposed to public view, or to attempt to Gain admittance
thereto,.
Anything heretofore in this section notwithstandin13 t~lis
Ordinance shall not apply to any ped,ller or solicitor 17110 knocks at
any door, or rl,n13s any bell at the invitation or with the consent

of some member' of the household at which he so applies for admission.
SECTION 2. Any person violating any of the provisions
of this Ord1nance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon
conviction thereof shall be punishable by a fine of not more than
TRRZE HUNDaED (0300.00) DOLLARS, or by imprisonment in the City
Jail of said City of Arcadia or in the County Jail of the' County
of Los An3eles, State of California, at the discretion of the
Committing Ma~istrate, for a period not exceeding three (3) months,
or by both such fine and imprisonment.
~ION 3. This Ordinance is hereby declared to be
necessary in order to preserve the public peace,health and safety
and the general welfare, to prevent crime, and to protect citizens
in the enjoyment of.tbe1r property.
SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption
of this Ordin~rrce and cause the same to be published once in the
Arcadia Tribunl9, a neVis raper of general circulation, published and
circulated in ,3aid City of Arcadia, and thirty (30) days from and
after the final passa:;e hereof the same shall ta)!e effect and be in
force.
I hereby certlfy that the foregoing Ordinance was adopted
at a regular meetin~ of the City Council of the City of ArcadIa,
held on the ~day of December.. 1938, by the affirmative vote of
at least three councilmen, to-wit:
