AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA,
CALIFORNIA, ORDERING, CALLING, PRO-
VIDING FOR AND GIVING NOTICE OF A
SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD IN THE
CITY OF ARCADIA ON THE'6TH DAY OF '
NOVEMBER, 1956, FOR THE PURPOSE OF
SUBMITTING TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS
OF SAID CITY A PROPOSITION TO AMEND
SECTION 402 OF THE ARCADIA CITY
CHARTER, AND CONSOLIDATING SAID
ELECTION WITH THE STATEWIDE GENERAL
ELECTION TO BE HELD ON SAID DATE.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, DCES
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That a special election be held, and the same
is hereby called to be held, in the City of Arcadia, California, on
the 6th da:Y of November, 1956, for the purpose of submitting to the
qualified voters of said city a proposition to amend Section' 402 of
the Arcadia City Charter as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
SECTION 2. That the polls for said election shall be
opened at seven o'clock, A.M., of the day of said election and shall
remain open continuously from said time until seven o'clock, P.M.,
of the same day, when said polls shall be closed, except as provided
in Section 5734 of the Elections Code of the State of California.
That on' the ballots to be used at said special election,
in addition to any other matters required by law, there shall be
printed substantially the following:
MARK CROSSES (..) ON BALLOT ONLY WITH RUBBER STAMP;
NEVER WITH PEN OR PENCIL.
(ABSENTEE BALLOTS MAY BE MARKED WITH PEN AND INK
OR PENCIL.)
INSTRUCTIONS TO VOTERS
To vote on any measure, stamp a cross (+) in the
votinl'i square after the word "YES" or after the
word 'NO". All marks, except the cross (+) are
forbidden. All distinguishing marks or erasures
are forbidden and make the ballot void.

If you wrongly stamp, tear or deface this ballot,
return it to the inspector of election and obtain
another.
On absent voter's ballots mark a cross (~)
with pen or pencil.

PROPOSED ARCADIA CITY CHARTER
AMENDMENT NO.1: Shall Section 402 of
the Arcadia City Charter be amended to
read as follows? Section 402. COMPEN-
SATION. The members of the City Coun-
cil .shall receive no compensation for
. their services as such, but shall re-
ceive reimbursement on order of the City
Council for Council authorized traveling
and other expenses when on official YES
duty. In addition, each member shall ;
receive the sum of one hundred dollars
per month, which amount shall be deemed
to be reimbursement of other out-of-
pocket expenditures and costs imposed ;
: upon him in serving as a City Council-
man.
The City Clerk shall receive com-
pensation for his services in such
amount and at such stated times as shall
be prescribed by ordinance adopted by the: NO
City Council, which compensation shall
not be increased or dfm!h1shed so as to
, affect the salary of an incumbent during
the continuation of his current term 'of
office.

SECTION 3. A cross (+) placed in the voting square after
the word "YES" in the manner hereinbefore provided shall be counted
in favor of the adoption of the proposition. A cross (~) placed in
the voting square after the word "NO" in the manner hereinbefore
provided shall be cou~ted against the adoption of the proposition.
SECTION'4. That the special municipal election hereby
called to be 'held in the City of Arcadia on the 6th day of November,
1956, shall be and is hereby ordered consolidated with the state-
wide'general election to be held on s~id date, and within the City
of Arcadia the precincts, polling places, voting booths and officers
of election for the special municipal election hereby called shall
be the same as those provided for said statewide general election.

The Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles hereby is
requested to order the consolidation of the special municipal elec-
tion hereby called with said statewide general election, and said
Board of Supervisors is authorized hereby to canvass the returns of
the special municipal election hereby called, and said elections
shall be held in all respects as if there were only one election,
and only one form of ballot shall be used. Said Board of.Supervi,--
sors shall certify the result of the canvass of the returns of
such special municipal election to the City Council of the City or
Arcadia who shall thereupon declare the result thereof.
SECTION 5. That the City Clerk shall certify to the pas-
sage and adoption of this ordinance by a vote of more than two-
thirds of all of the members of the City Council of said City, and
shall cause said ordinance to be published once a week for two weeks
in the Arcadia Tribune and Arcadia News, a weekly newspaper of gen-
eral circulation in said city. No other notice of such election
peed be given.
SECTION 6. The City Clerk shall cause to have copies of
the proposed charter amendment hereinabove set forth, together with
copies of Section 402 of the Arcadia City Charter as now in effect,
on file in her office and available for inspection by or distribu-
tion to persons up9n app~ication therefor.
SECTION 7. This ordinance shall take effect upon adoption.
ADOPTED, SIGNED AND APPROVED this 23th day of A'ugust,
1956.

was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the City Council
duly held on the 21st day of August, 1956, and thereafter at an
adjourned regular meeting of said City Council, duly held on the 29th
day of August, 1956, was reread, duly passed and adopted by said
City 'Council and signed and approved by the Mayor of said city, and
that said ordinance was passed and adopted by a vote of more than
two-thirds of the members of said City Council, to wit:
