SUBJECT: GIFT OF $8,100.00 FROM THE ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION
FOR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES AT THE LIBRARY
Recommended action: Accept the donation
SUMMARY
The Arcadia Public Library Foundation, as part of its ongoing mission to support the Library's
goals and objectives, is donating an additional $8,100.00 to the Library for programs and
services for 2011-12.
DISCUSSION
The funds being donated will be used for the following purposes:
• English Conversation Class: Funds will be used to provide additional tutor materials
and the monthly Easy English News for the English Conversation Class held at the
Library each Monday. These materials enrich the class experience for both tutors and
the approximately 100 students who attend each week.
• Pre-loaded video players for Young children: The Library will purchase 55 Playaway
View machines for the youngest patrons. The View is the first and only pre-loaded
video player designed with children and libraries in mind; it is simple, portable, and
durable. The Library added a few of these to the collection in early July 2011 and they
are difficult to keep on the shelf due to their popularity. New additions will be eagerly
checked-out.
• eBook selections: The Library has joined the Southern California Digital Library. By late
February 2012, patrons will be able to borrow downloadable eBooks and eAudio titles.
These funds will be used to provide eBooks exclusively for Arcadia Public Library
patrons, not for the whole consortium.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no impact to the City's budget. The Library Board approves expenditures of all
donations.
RECOMMENDATION
