HomeMy WebLinkAbout4122 RESOLUTION NO. ~ ~/..7:U A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA EXPRESSING SUPPORT OF THE PERIPHERAL CANAL PORTION OF THE STATE WATER PROJECT. WHEREAS, the City of Arcadia, through the Upper San Gabriel Val:ey Municipal Water District, is a member of The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and is thus directly interested in the State Water Project; and WHEREAS, the Peripheral Canal, which will transport water around the Delta of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, is an essential feature of the State Water Project; and WHEREAS, extensive studies by competent agencies of the State and Federal Government show that the proposed canal will serve the best intereE~of the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta, the State Water Project, and the Central Valley Project; and WHEREAS, misrepresentations of factual matters relating to the canal, and the entire water project, have been widely pub- lished ~n an attempt to obscure the real benefits of the canal and prevent construction thereof; and WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of California have just expectations, supported by the actual facts and history of these projects, that the Peripheral Canal and the entire State Water Project will be completed according to schedule; and WHEREAS, the federal government has now submitted a fea- sibility report to the Governor for his approval, which approval is necessary in order to construct the canal as a joint-use facil- ity of the Central Valley Project and the State Water Project, -1- ~ '//..;;1..,. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA DOES HEREBY express its support of the Peripheral Canal and urges Governor Reagan to approve the feasibility report and assure the people of the State of California that he Endorses the proposal for construction of the Peripheral Canal. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Congress of the United States is urged to authorize the Peripheral Canal as a joint-use facility of the Federal Central Valley Project and the State Water Project. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and send copies thereof to the Governor, the Director of the Department of Water Resources, the Secretary of the Resources Agency, and to the California Congressional delegation. Bo,t 60 Arcadia, California 91006 Dear MillS Van Maanen: In recent months my office has received numerous expressions of interest and concern from citizens all over tho state with respect to possible effects of various features of the State Water project on the environment of the Delta-Bay area and on Southern California. Those who take the time to write on this subject do so with great sincerity. Unfortunately, many have based their opinions upon information which is often misleading and incomplete. It is refreshing to receive a comment such as yours which clearly reflects a thoughtful and penetrating analysis of some of the problems which face the state as we strive to marshal the valuable natura 1 resource of water to the greatest benefit of all Californians.
