HomeMy WebLinkAbout6306 RESOLUTION NO. 6306 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, OPPOSING ASSEMBLY BILL 2115, OR ANY SIMILAR LEGISLATION, PERTAINING TO ATHLETIC TEAM NAMES AND MASCOTS WHEREAS, State Assembly Bill 2115, as proposed, would prohibit public schools from using specified American Indian-related names, including "Apaches" as currently and historically used by Arcadia High School; and WHEREAS, Arcadia High School has chosen to be symbolized by the Apaches because this symbol exemplifies characteristics that are valued such as courage, perseverance, strong family relationships, and respect for the environment; and WHEREAS, Arcadia High School has established a relationship with the White Mountain Apaches, including student and cultural exchanges, humanitarian aid, and discussion regarding appropriate use of Indian symbols; and WHEREAS, according to a poll conducted by the Peter Harris Research Group, 83% of Indians do not object to the use of Indian mascots or symbols in a fashion similar to that used by Arcadia High School, and 88% of Indians do not believe such use contributes to discrimination; and WHEREAS, Arcadia High School has maintained strict oversight of school use of the Apache name and representations to assure that such use is respectful and appropriate. . NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, DOES HEREBY FIND, DETERMINE AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: 6306 SECTION 1. The City Council opposes the passage of State Assembly Bill 2115, or any similar legislation, which would prohibit the use of certain American Indian names for school or athletic team names. SECTION 2. The City Council supports the Arcadia Unified School District and Arcadia High School in their desire to continue to use "Apache" as their official team name and school mascot. SECTION 3. The City Council directs that a copy of this resolution be sent to the City's representatives in the State Legislature and to the Governor of California so that the City's opposition to State Assembly Bill 2115, or any similar legislation, is duly noted. SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution. Passed, approved and adopted this 4th day of June, 2002.
