OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, CONDEMNING HATE
CRIMES AND OTHER SENSELESS ACTS OF VIOLENCE
WHEREAS, our great nation has recently been plagued by an increasing and
disturbing number of hate crimes and other senseless acts of violence; and
WHEREAS, on August 10, 1999, the most recent of such acts of violence
took place at the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Granada Hills, at
which five individuals (including three young children, a teenager and a senior
citizen) were wounded and a U.S. postal worker was subsequently killed; and
WHEREAS, the cowardly perpetrator of these crimes exhibited a total
disregard for the sanctity of human life and embodied the most vile and destructive
characteristics of inhumanity, intolerance and racism; and
WHEREAS, the City of Arcadia is blessed with a richly diverse population
that proudly includes members of almost every race, ethnicity, religion and creed;
and
WHEREAS, it is important for all Arcadians to react quickly and loudly to
any hate crime and other senseless act of violence so as to demonstrate and declare,
clearly and without reservation, that any such act is intolerable, unacceptable and
contrary to the very foundation upon which our great nation was founded and
continues to prosper.
