RESOLUTION 5524
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR
OF CALIFORNIA TO HALT THE MALATHION AERIAL
SPRAYING PROGRAM
WHEREAS, the medfly poses a significant threat to agriculture
in california; and
WHEREAS, the State of California is attempting to control this
pest through repeated aerial spraying of Malathion; and
WHEREAS, a significant number of our citizens have become
concerned about the safety of Malathion and potential threats to
themselves, their children, the elderly and animals; and
WHEREAS, there is a dispute within the scientific community
regarding the safety of Malathion; and
WHEREAS, there is some question as to whether the aerial
spraying is accomplishing the objective of eliminating the medfly.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA DOES
HEREBY FIND, DETERMINE AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1.
That Governor George Deukmejian direct an
immediate halt to the Malathion aerial spraying program until a
scientific advisory panel can prove that Malathion is safe to the
public.
SECTION 2 .
That the, Governor and other involved State
officials vigorously pursue alternative methods of eliminating this
dangerous pest.

SECTION 3 ..
That certified copies of this Resolution be
forwarded by the city Clerk to the State Governor, elected State
Officials representing the Arcadia area, the State Department of
Food and Agriculture and all neighboring cities in the San Gabriel
Valley.
SECTION 4. That the City Clerk shall certify to the adoption
of this Resolution.
Passed, approved and adopted this 20th day of February, 1990.

I, JUNE D. ALFORD, City Clerk of the City of Arcadia, hereby
certify that the foregoing Resolution No. 5524 was passed and
adopted by the City Council of the City of Arcadia, signed by the
Mayor and attested to by the City Clerk at a regular meeting of
said council held on the 20th day of February, 1990 and that said
Resolution was adopted by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: Councilmember Gilb, Lojeski, Young and Chandler
NOES: None
ABSENT: Councilmember Harbicht
