HomeMy WebLinkAbout5580 RESOLUTION NO. 5580 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE ARCADIA COALITION FOR EDUCATION (ACE). WHEREAS, the future prosperity of California is directly related to the investment the State is willing to make in its workers of tomorrow: today's kindergarten through grade twelve students; and WHEREAS, the educational system in California will be the single most important focus for efforts to assure that students are prepared for the demands of the economy and society of the emerging California; and WHEREAS, the importance of good schools to the well-being of a local community is recognized in terms of reduced crime rates and community pride resulting in attractiveness to future homeowners and ultimately the maintenance of strong property values; and WHEREAS, the current attitude of California towards education of the young, as reflected in the investment of resources, is one of mediocrity as evidenced by the State's ranking of 44 of the 50 states in the percentage of state general fund expenditures per capita spent on public education; and WHEREAS, the continued expenditure of $30,000 to keep one young adult in the California Youth Authority for one year versus the investment of $3900 in the education of a child for a year is not only shortsighted, it is economically disastrous; and 5580 WHEREAS, Californians have consistently spoken in favor of making educational expenditures the number one priority for their tax dollars and expect not just an adequate educational system but a superior educational program for all students; and WHEREAS, since 80 percent of all funds for local education comes from the state through the budget adopted by the State Legislature and signed by the Governor, it is imperative that these elected officials respond to their constituents and be responsible for pro- viding the necessary funds for a superior educational system, one that brings it to comparability with the top 10 industrialized states in the nation by the year 2000. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That the City of Arcadia supports the efforts of the Arcadia Coalition for Education (ACE). SECTION 2. That the State Legislature invest in California's 'greatest natural-resource - its children. SECTION 3. That the City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution and distribute copies to the appropriate legis- lative committees-and the Governor of California.
