RESOLUTION NO. 1422.
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA
APPROVING PROPOSED PLAN FOR THE ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT OF CERTAIN
REAL PROPERTY WITHIN THE CITY OF ARCADIA AS AN ARBORETUM AND BOTANIC
GARDEN.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA DOES RESOLVE AS
FOLLOi/SI
SECTION 1. WHEREAS, this City Council is informed that the
Southern California Horticultural Institute, a non profit corporation,
organized and existing under the laws of the state of California,
desires to acquire a portion of Rancho Santa Anita, including the
lake located thereon, consisting in all of approximately one hundred
(100) acres, for use as an Arboretum and Botanic Garden, and
VffiEREAS, this Council is further informed that in the event
said site is acquired for such purposes it will be developed in such
manner as to retain the natural beauty and historic and romantic
value of the property, and at the same time said site will be used
for the planting of trees, shrubs and other horticultural material
from various parts of the world, with the prospects in view of
(a) practical demonstration of horticultural possibilities in
California, (b) a center of researoh and scientific study in
collaboration with educational institutes, and with Federal, State
and county Departments of Agriculture, (c) pUblicationsand bulletins
dealing with matters of horticultural interest, and
WHEREAS, in the opinion of this City Council the establish.
ment and maintenance of such Arboretum and Botanic Garden will be of
g~eat value to the people of the State of California, and
WHEREAS, the preservation of said site established for the
purposes herein set forth will be better insured by said site being
acquired and owned by the State of California, or the County of
Los Angeles,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Council does hereby
approve of the establishment of an Arboretum and Botanic Garden
within the City of Arcadia at the location herein described, end does
hereby urge the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles
to acquire said property for the uses herein specified, and such

other similar use as may be deemed beneficial to the people of
the State of California.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was adopted
at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Arcadia,
held on the 4th day of September, 1945, by the affirmative vote of
at least three Councilmen, to wit:
AYES: Councilmen, Adoook, Leeper, Nugent, Ormsby and Russell
