RESOLUTION NO. 2712 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES TO ACQUIRE ADDITIONAL ABANDONED RAILWAY RIGHT OF WAY. WHEREAS, the County of Los Angeles has acquired and de- veloped for park purposes approximately 185 acres in the heart of the City of Arcadia, bounded roughly by Santa Anita Avenue, Hunt- ington Drive, Huntington Place and the abandoned Pacific Electric RailWay right of way; and, WHEREAS, the County of Los Angeles has maintained the said site as a county park in a manner which is a tribute to the community of Arcadia and the County of Los Angeles alike; and, WHEREAS, the City of Arcadia has acquired the greater portion of the property adjacent to the said county park between Huntington Drive and the aforesaid abandoned Pacific Electric Rail- way right of way, and has caused or permitted to be planned and constructed thereon, among other things# the Arcadia City Hall and Civic Center site, the California National Guard Armory and the Southern Methodist Hospital; and, WHEREAS, the County has heretofore acquired for road pur- poses that portion of the abandoned Pacific Electric Railway right of way aQjacent to the aforesaid property of the City of Arcadia, extending front Huntington Drive on the north to Huntington Drive on the south at its conjunction with Huntington Place and Holly Avenue; and, WHEREAS, adjacent to and easterly of the aforesaid aban- doned Pa~ific Electric Railway right of way heretofore acquired for road purposes by the County of Los Angeles as aforesaid, there exists a strip of land forty feet in width extending from Hunting- ton Drive on the north to Huntington Place on the south, which said strip of land was formerly the right of way of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, successor in interest to the title of the San -1- 2712 ;\"" . , ~ < Gabriel Valley Rapid Transit Railway, which said 40-foot strip of land is now in private ownership; and, WHEREAS, the Los Angeles County Flood Control District is presently acquiring by eminent domain a portion of said 40-foot strip of abandoned Southern Pacific Railroad Company right of way, extending from the California National Guard Armory on the north to Huntington Place on the southi and, WHEREAS, the 40-foot strip of abandoned Southern Pacific Railway right of way from the National Gaurd. Armory in the south to the northerly line of the Arcadia Civic Center on the north is in- capable of proper development under private ownership, and if it be allowed to remain in private ownership will doubtless be developed in such a manner as to be det~1mental to both the Los Angeles County Park and the Arcadia Civic Center; and, WHEREAS, said portion of the 40-foot strip of abandoned Southern Pacific Railroad Company right of way is immediately adja- cent and contiguous to the aforesaid Los Angeles County Park, but is separated from the Arcadia Civic Center property by the abandoned Pacific Electric Railway right of way, heretofore acquired by the County of Los Angeles for street purposes and proposed to be im- proved as a public street by the City of Arcadia; NOW, THEREFORE; THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA; CALIFORNIA, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That the City Council of the City of Arcadia does hereby respectfully request that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles acquire for park purposes that portion of the abandoned Southern Pacific Railroad Company right of way adja- cent and contiguous to the aforesaid Loe Angeles County Park, from the California National Gu~rd Armory site to the north end of the Arcadia Civic Center site, so that the property may be properly used by the public and properly integrated with the public uses for park purposes, street and highway purposes and Civic Center pur- poses as presently planned for all properties adjacent to said -2- 2712 4 40-foot strip of abandoned Southern Pacific Railroad right of way. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution and shall cause a copy of the same to be forwarded to the Honorable Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles CountYI together with a map delineating each of the various parcels of land herein- above described or referred to. I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Arcadial held on the 15th day of November . 1955. by the affirmative vote of at least three Councilmen. to wit: AYES: Councilmen Camphouse.
