A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL.OF
THE CITY OF, ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA,
GHANTING A VARIANCE UPON SPECIFIED
CONDITIONS FOR THE ERECTION AND
MAINTENANCE OF A MOTEL ON PROPERTY
LOCATED AT 225 COLORADO PLACE IN
SAID CITY.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF .THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, DOES
HEREBY DETERMINE AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That there was filed with the City Planning
Commission on the 21st day of June, 1962, the application of Motel 6
as optionee, by William W. Becker and Paul A. Greene, for a zone vari-
ance for the erection and operation of a motel on property at 225
Colorado Place in the City of Arcadia, County of Los Angeles, State
of Catifornia, described as'foilows:
Part.of Lot 1, Tract No. 949, as shown on map
recorded in Book 17, page 13, of Maps, records
of Los Angeles County, commencing South
0047'43" East 17.98 feet from t1'e northwest
corner of Lot 22, Tract No. 14745; thence South
0047'43" East 476.91 feet; thence West on a
curve concave to the South (radius equals 430
feet) 100.99 feet; thence northwest on a curve
concave to the northeast (radius equals 20-Teet)
31.09 feet; thence northwest along the north-
east line of Colorado Place 315.49 feet; thence
northeast on a curve concave to the southeast
(radius equals 20 feet) 30.11 feet; thence
northeast on. a curve concave to the northwest
(radius gquals 180 feet) 177.78 feet; thence
North 0'47'43" West 66.67 feet; thence North
89012'17" East 190 feet to beginning.
That after due notice as required by the Zoning Ordinance of said
City, as amended, a public hearing was duly held on the matter by
and before said City Planning Commission on July 10, 1962, which
hearing was duly continued to July 24, 1962, and again duly contin-
ued to August 14, 1962, at each of which times ail interested per-
sons were given full opportunity to be heard and to present evidence.
That no decision was rendered on said matter by said City Planning
Commission within thirty-five (35) days after the conclusion of the

public hearing thereon, and'pursuant to Section 9291.2.6 of the Arcad~a
Municipal Code the entire matter was referred to the City Council with-

out recommendation. That after notice duly given, a puqlic hearing on
said ma~ter was held by and before,the Arcadia City Council on Septem-
ber 18, 1962, at w~ich time all persons were again given full oppor-
tunity to be heard and to present .evidence. That said hearing was

duly continued to October 2, 1962, at the close of which hearing this
Council ,by simple nlotion voted to deny the application for a zo~e vari-
ance. That on October 16, ,1962 Arthur A. Hensell, atto~ney for Paul A.

preene and William W. Becker, requested a reconsideration of the City
., ,
Council's said act:l.dn of October 2, 1962 stati.ng that new'plans more in
conformity with other motels 'in the vicinity had been developed. That
upon motion duly made and carried for reconsideration, this Council
thereupon referred the matter back to the Planning Commission for ad-
visory comments and staff recommendation and set November 7, 1962 for
. another public hearing on the matter.
~ECTION 2. That on November 7, 1962, after notice duly given,
,a pu.blic hearing. was held by the City Council on.said application for
the revised plans submitted in connection therewith, at which time all
interested persons were given full opportunity to be heard.and to pre-

sent evidence. That there were protests to the granting of the variance

the same side of Colorado Place on each side of subject property. That
although all property on the northeast side of Colorado Place from Colo-
rado Boulevard to San Juan Drive is zoned R-3, every parcel thereof

shape and location constitute an exceptional circumstance that does not

apply generally to property or class of use in an R-3 zone, and the
gran~ing of the requested variance is necessary for the preservation
and enjoyment of substantial property rights of the applicant possessed
by other properties 'in the. same zone and viCinity.
That the granting

of the variance upon the conditions hereinafter specified will not be
,
materially detrimental to the public heal~h or welfare or injurious
to property or' i~provements in the zone and vicinity 1n which it is
located, and will not adversely affect the comprehensive general plan.
SECTION,]. That for the foregoing reasons, a variance is
hereby granted to permit the use of the above-described property for
the erection and operation of a motel upon the fOllowing conditions:
a. That the variance not be operative until complete plot
plans, building plans and ele~ations have been submitted to and ap-
proved by the Planning Commission, which shall be within one year from
the date hereof. That no site work shall be done until a building per-
mit for the erection of the motel has been issued, such build'ing permit
not'to be issued until the plans have been approved by all interested
City, County and State Departments.
b. That grading and drainage plans be submttted and approved
by the Department of Public Works prior to the issuance of a building
permit.
c. That water services shall meet with the standards set up
in the Uniform Plumbing Code.
d. That all parking lot illumination and building illumina-
tion shall be designed and directed away from the adjoining properties
and shall meet with the approval of the Department of Public Works.
e. That the Planning Commission or City Council may grant
minor modifications, without further public hearings or notice thereof,
of the conditions set out above to the extent necessary to accomplish
the purpose of this variance.
f. That curb, gutter, street lights and sidewalks be

constructed and installed to the specifications and standards which
meet the approval of the Department of Public Works and the State Divi-
sion of Highways.
g. That the sewer line be relocated and necessary easements
be granted to the approval of the Department of Public Works.
h. That final plans and working drawings shall be in sub-
stantial compliance with Plan C as submitted by applicant.
SECTION I,. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of

this resolution.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was adopted
at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Arcadia held
on the 20th
day of November,

at least three Councilmen, to wit:
