RESOLUTION NO. 3552
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, IN
OPPOSITION TO PROPOSAL TO MAKE LOCAL
,ELECTIVE OFFICES PARTISAN.
THE CI'l'Y COUNCIL OF THE CI,TY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA,
DOES DETERMINE AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the principles, aims, purposes and
platforms of national political parties have both historical sig-
nificance and every-day application in matters of both state and
national government. That problems of local government, both city
and county, differ largely from the problems of state and federal
governments, and the principles, aims, purposes and platforms of
national political parties have no relationship to nor direct
bearing upon the problems of local government or rendition of local
services. That to inject the platforms and policies of national
parties into local government by requiring or even permitting the
designation of party affiliation on local election ballots will
inject irrelevant issues into local politics, can serve only to
confuse rather than to assist the local electorate, and will be
harmful rather than helpful to local government.
SECTION 2. That the members of thi6 Council, consisting
as it does of members of both major national parties and though
frequently divided in its opinion on many matters, i6 nevertheless
unanimous, both individually and as members of this Council, in
opposing strenuously any attempts to inject into local government
national party politics or policies, and in opposing any measure
heretofore introduced or that may hereafter be proposed, the pur-
pose or effect of which may be to cause or permit identification
of candidates in local elections by the designation of their national
