HomeMy WebLinkAbout3386 I' , RESOLUTION NO. 3386 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES, STATE OF CALIFORNIA,RE APPLICATION OF THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA AND SANTA FE RAILWAY COMPANY BEFORE THE INTERSTATE COMMERCE COMMISSION (FINANCE DOCKET NO. ,21334) WHEREAS, the application of The Atchison, Topkea and Santa Fe Railway Company for authority under Section 5(2) of the Interstate Commerce' Act to acquire control of the Western Pacific Railroad Company by purchase and exchange of its capital stock, Finance Docket No. 21334, was filed with the Interstate Commerce Cominissionon October 25, 1960; WHEREAS, application of the Southern Pacific Company for authority under Section 5 (2) of the Interstate Commerce Act to acquire control of the Western Pacific Railroad Company by purchase of' its capital stock, Finance Docket No. 21314, was filed with the Interstate' Commerce Commission on October J2, 1960; WHEREAS, the application of The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company states that control by it will (1) af- firmatively contribute to adequate transportation service by assur- ing continuation of aggressive competition in the dynamically expanding area immediately affected and (2) by preserving and fostering established gateways and routes via which the increased traffic demands of the area may be met in the future; WHEREAS, the economic interest and the publiC welfare of the City of Arcadia is directly related to the preservation of com- petitive railroad se.rvice'in California and the Far West and the preservation and further use of competitive rail gateways and facilities and competitive rail routes to and from California, the Pacific Northwest, the South and East; WHEREAS, the continuation of Western Pacific as a rail- road service directly competitive to the service offered by the -1-, 3386 Southern Pacif'ic Company will enable this City and its surrounding' area to continue to improve its industrial, commercial and agri- cultural growth; WHEREAS, the City of Arcadia is and since its incorpora- tion,over 50 years ago has been served and transected by the At- chison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company lines; WHEREAS, the proposal of the Southern Pacific 'Company'to own and control, the Western Pacific Railroad Company does not pro- vide a basis for the accomplishment of the objectives to which the interests ,of this City are directly related; and WHEREAS, control of the Western Pacific Railroad Company by the Southern Pacific Company would not only preclude the reali- zation of the benefits flowing from the accomplishment of these' , objectives but would ,have a disadvantageous effect upon the econ,omy of this City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Arcadia, County of Los Angeles, State of California, hereby gives its full support to the application of The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company to the Interstate, Commerce Com:- 'mission for approval of its plan for control of the Western Pacific Railroad Company. NOW" THEREFORE, BE IT, FURTHER RESOLVED that the City . '... Council of the C1tyof Arcadia, is opposed to the application of the , , ' Sbutherh,facificCompanY,to the Interstate ,Commerce Commission ,for approval of its plan for control, of, ,the Western Pacific, Railroad Company. BElT FURTHER RESOLVED t~ the City Manager of the City of Arcadia, be and he is hereby authorized and directed to sign, verify and fil~ on behalf of the City Council of the City of Ar- cadia a petition for leave to intervene in support of the applica- tion of The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company and in opposition to the application'of the Southern Pacific Company, and -2- 3386 to take all reasonable steps in furtherance of the interests of the City of Arcadia in the proceeding or proceedings before the Interstate Commerce Commission. The City Clerk shall certify to the'adoption of this resolution.
