HomeMy WebLinkAbout4054 RESOLUTION NO. 4054 A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Arcadia Endorsing Vigorous Enforcement of Regulations for Control of Water Pollution and Urging that Regulations Be Strengthened Where Necessary, WHEREAS, the Pacific Ocean is one of our greatest natural environmental assets and attractions; and WHEREAS, underground water basins are an extremely important source of the overall domestic water supply in Southern California; and whereas, many of said basins are closely connected with rivers, streams and flood control facilities; and WHEREAS, increased urbanization of our State and partic- ularly of the Southern California area has led to increasing pollution of our ocean and bay waters and has endangered the qualjty of water in underground basins; and WHEREAS, governmental agencies both contribute to the pollution and are directly affected by the resulting impairment of their natural environment; and WHEREAS, the League of California Cities has been erroneOUSly mentioned as an opponent of higher standards for the protection of these natural assets of our area; and WHEREAS, in fact the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles County Division of the League of California Cities on July 11, 1968, unanimously passed a resolution stating "That the Los Angeles County Division of the League urge vigorous enforcement of standards controlling water pollution of the ocean, harbors and bay areas adjacent to Los Angeles County, Further, that the two State agencies most actively involved, the Department of Fish and Game, and the Los Angeles Regional Water quality Control Board, more actively cooperate and effectively coordinate their activity in preventing water pollu- tion"; and ' WHEREAS, decisions must be made soon by regional and State agencies concerning quality standards for water resources; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, RESOLVES: 1. That the City Council endorses vigorous enforcement of applicable standards designed to control water pollution in the ocean, harbors and bay areas, underground water basins, and rivers and streams within Los Angeles County, and the City Council urges the responsible authorities to raise the standards for con- trol of pollution where it appears that existing standards are inadequate; -1- 4054 2. That the Los Angeles County Division of the League o~ California Cities is requested to reaffirm its position of July 11, 1968, and to offer its assistance to the members of the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board in carrying forward this policy; and 3. That copies of this Resolution be sent to our State Legislators regional and local officials directly concerned with water quality standards, the League of California Cities and to each city in Los Angeles County. SECTION 1, The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Arcadia, held on the 18th day of February, 1969, by the affirmative vote of at least three Councilment, to wit: AYES: Councilmen Arth, Butterworth, Considine, Helms and Hage NOES: None ABSEN'l' : None SIGNED AND APPROVED this 18th day of February, 1969, Arcadia ATTEST: (SEAL) , -2- 4054
