HomeMy WebLinkAbout4076 RESOLUTION NO. 4076 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA ENDORSING ALL EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF JUDGES FOR LOS ANGELES COUNTY WHEREAS, the Los Angeles County backlog of pending civil and criminal cases has now exploded to the point where the legal rights and protections of every citizen of Los Angeles County is now severely affected, and the present congestion represents an extreme danger to all citizens of Los Angeles County, and WHEREAS, the situation in our own district of the Superior Court is extremely serious, and in certain of the districts of Los Angeles County, the situation has actually become perilous with such districts as the East District of Los Angeles now showing a criminal backlog of cases 230% greater than last year, and the civil calendar in an equally perilous condition with a backlog now 60% greater than last year and over 50 cases waiting to be set for trial in one civil court, and WHEREAS, certain of our districts have court facilities available and other districts are presently constructing facilities which will soon be available, and WHEREAS, we have no need more critical than the need for justice for our citizens, and WHEREAS, there is presently pending a request for an additional fourteen judges for Los Angeles County, which will not cut into the backlog of cases, and WHEREAS, the expense of adding an additional six judges of Los Angeles County will be less than .14~ per year per person, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Arcadia that we do hereby unanimously endorse all efforts to increase the number of judges for Los Angeles County by a minimum of twenty additional Superior Court judges, and - 1 - 4076 , we do hereby join with our fellow citizens in urging the legislature, the Board of Supervisors, and the Governor of this State to cooperate in presently pending efforts to 'increase the number of judges for this County, and we further voice our support for all counties in a ,similar position, recognizing that the need of our citizenry for additional judges and facilities is a need that goes to the very heart of the preservation of our American Democratic system of government. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and shall forward a certified copy hereof to the Honorable Governor of the State of California, State Senator, State Assemblymen and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
