DATE: October 2, 2012
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mary Beth Hayes, Director of Library & Museum Services fq@14-
SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF A NAME CHANGE FOR THE RUTH AND
CHARLES GILB ARCADIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM TO THE GILB
MUSEUM OF ARCADIA HERITAGE.
Recommendation: Adopt Resolution 6851 changing the name of the
Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum to the Gilb
Museum of Arcadia Heritage and approve a supplemental
appropriation of $3,400 to remove and replace the current outdoor
signage with new signage.
SUMMARY
The Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum (Museum) has served as a
repository and exhibit space for Arcadia's history, art and cultural traditions since its
opening in 2001. Recently, the Arcadia Historical Museum Commission became
concerned about confusion with the current name of the Museum and other historical
agencies and groups in Arcadia.
It is recommended that the City Council adopt Resolution No. 6851, a Resolution to
change the name of the Museum to the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. It is further
recommended that the City Council approve a supplemental appropriation of $3,400 to
remove and replace the current sign on the exterior of the Museum with a new sign.
BACKGROUND
The Arcadia Historical Museum was named in honor of Ruth and Charles Gilb. The
Gilbs supported the Museum from its inception, and over the years, continued to
support its vision for the future. Mr. Gilb passed away in 2008 and is survived by his
wife Ruth, who continues her dedicated work with the Museum. Mrs. Gilb currently
serves as a member of the Historical Museum Commission.

DISCUSSION
The Historical Museum Commission began discussing a possible name change several
months ago. In the process of fundraising for the new Museum Education Center, it
became apparent that there was confusion in the community about the Museum and
other historical groups in the City. After much discussion about these concerns, on July
10, 2012, the Arcadia Historical Museum Commission voted unanimously to
recommend that the City Council change the name of the Museum to the "Gilb Museum
of Arcadia Heritage ". Commission members felt that this name reflected the Museum's
mission to collect, preserve and recognize Gilb was present at the July 10
recognizing and honoring Ruth and Ch arles GiIb
meeting and indicated her support for the proposed name change. The proposed name
is also sufficiently different from any other historical group in the City.
FISCAL IMPACT
All instances of the current name will need to be changed to the new name. Some of
these changes have no fiscal impact other than staff time. Changes to business cards,
letterhead, flyers and brochures can be absorbed by the Museum's current operating
budget. The only significant cost would be to remove and replace the sign on the
exterior of the Museum and the sign by Huntington Drive. The estimated cost for this
project is approximately $3,010.54.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended the City Council adopt Resolution 6851 changing the name of the
Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum to the Gilb Museum of Arcadia
Heritage and approve a supplemental appropriation of $3,400 to remove and replace
the current outdoor signage with new signage.
