CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARCADIA
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING
SEPTEMBER 15, 1981
ROLL CALL
The City Council of the City of Arcadia met in an adjourned regular
session September 15, 1981 in the City Hall Conference Room.
PRESENT: Councilmen Drin9, Haltom, Pellegrino, Sae1id, Gi1b
ABSENT: None
Agenda items were explored and discussion held on the regular meeting
scheduled for October 20. It was noted the City Council and some staff
members will be attending the League of California Cities Conference in
San Francisco on that date. It was determined to hold that meeting on
October 21. Publicity will go forward.
The City Manager introduced his new administrative aide, Steve Boshen,
who came to the City from Oakland having worked in the same capacity in
the City of Hayward, Ca. It was also noted that the Business License
Officer, Robert Sullivan, is recuperating from a mild heart attack and
may be away from work for about 6 weeks. It is fortunate that this is
a slow period for this particular office and the present personnel will
be able to handle it.
A date will be determined for the requested meeting with the School
Board .. Tentatively set for January 11 at 7 p.m. To be checked out.
The Director of Public Works will provide a breakdown report on the
cost of the traffic island installation in Old Ranch Road - Job No. 510.
FIREWORKS
Ed Newman, Chairman of the Arcadia American Legion Post Fireworks' Pro-
gram, explored the past 46 years of conducting the sale of fireworks in
the City and hoped Council would continue to approve the sale. He re-
cited the reasons for the discontinuance of the fireworks display on the
evening of July 4 - that it was hoped it would ease the traffic conges-
tion and cleanup on the part of the City.
During this consideration Past Post Commander Park Webster explored the
many contributions and projects provided for various City departments.
Chuck Bostock, Past Commander, continued this explanation and said in
part that the continuation of the program would allow the City to con-
trol the sale of safe and sane fireworks by placing its trust in the
organization.
Mayor Gilb reminded everyone that a public hearing is to be held on
this matter October 6 and commented that whatever is done by the City
may be preempted by the State. During this interim Mr. Newman said he
would check with cities which have banned the fireworks to ascertain
the impact on fire problems on the 4th of July.
