SUBJECT: 'ACCEPT THE DONATION OF $5,000 FROM THE HAKKA FOUNDATION
Recommendation: ACCEPT THE DONATION
SUMMARY
The Hakka Foundation donated $2,500 to the Arcadia Public Library for the Chinese
language collection and $2,500 for the purchase of multimedia hardware and software.
DISCUSSION
The donated funds will be used for the following purposes:
• Purchase of new Chinese language materials.
• Purchase of multimedia hardware and software to create a new multi -media
computer learning lab for teens and adults. This would allow the Library to move
from content consumption to also providing tools for content creation, such as
Photoshop, drawing, design and graphics creation, which are all important in the
21St century lifelong learning arena.
The current computer software and hardware provide the basics to patrons including
word processing, Excel, PowerPoint and access to the Internet and Library's catalog.
Patrons, adult and student alike, are regularly requesting access to multimedia
hardware and software that is more robust to work with digital photos, graphic design,
video creation and more.

The Hakka Foundation is located in Arcadia and was "established to promote Hakka
Spirit. The objectives of Hakka Foundation are to maintain Hakka Heritage, to promote
the practice of self- improvement, self- sufficiency and independence, to serve the
community with brotherly love, and to unite with nature in harmony. In peace, therefore,
all beings have better lives together ". More information can be found on their website at

FISCAL IMPACT
The Hakka Foundation has donated a total of $5,000. Funding for these items is very
welcome and provides a positive budgetary impact for the Library. The Library will be
able to purchase additional Chinese language titles and provide much sought after
multi -media technology. Both popular services support the mission of the Library to
provide for the educational and recreational needs of a diverse community.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended the City Council accept the donation of $5,000 from the Hakka
Foundation.
