PRESENT: Councilmembers Chandler, Gilb, Harbicht, Lojeski and Young ABSENT: None PRESENTATION OF TWO PROPOSED HOTEL DEVELOPMENTS FOR THE NORTH SIDE OF HUNTINGTON DRIVE (EMKAY PROJECT) Rick Smith of Emkay introduced representatives of the two hotel projects for the north side project.and explained in detail how the concept has changed during the past year. The two developments are 1) Residence Inn and 2) Hampton Inn, both interested in long-term commitments with the City. The Residence Inn is owned 50 percent by the Holiday Corporation, Hotel Division and the Hampton Inn is owned 100 percent by the same corporation. Mr. Smith felt both hotels are capable of keeping the hotels full and Emkay is looking forward to having these in the City. RESIDENCE INN John F. Carr then made his presentation starting with projectua1s of the Inn. The concept bears out the theme, "A Home Away from Home" with a full selection of amenities designed to uncomp1icate life when traveling including a suite for guests, a fully equipped kitchen, living room with woodburning fireplace, a swimming pool and spa, a sports area along with a complimentary continental breakfast. From the outside the Residence Inn looks like a community of townhouses, accented with walkways, lawns and land- scaping. Rates are the same as those charged by first class hotels. There would be 120 suites (1 and 2 bedrooms). One is now operating in Costa Mesa, one in Manhattan Beach ... others are being constructed or are in the planning stage at Irvine, Anaheim, Long Beach, etc. Impact studies are prepared for each project. Restaurants and bars are not included which they feel would reduce traffic and noise at late hours. Location of the facility was indicated on drawings ... the entrance would be on Huntington Drive, however, there would be other entrances in the rear also. HAMPTON INN Larry Lazelle exhibited pictures of the proposed Inn under the Holiday Inn umbrella (parent company). This facility is primarily for the business traveler -. a place where guests find rooms and service design~d to please the/.discriminating and prices which allow their dollars to go farther. This is a new trend resulting in an efficient, well designed hotel system. They operate their 4/21/87 -1, 29:0164 own hotels. The Hampton Inn proposed for Arcadia would have 123 rooms, 'provide a continental breakfast and all of the amenities found in most hotels. Those cities mentioned as having the hotel or one in the planning stage were Buena Park, Mission Viejo, West Covina, Anaheim and one close to LAX. It is common sense lodging and this is accomplished by eliminating costly restaurants, lounges for guests who do not need them and providing top quality rooms at reasonable rates. In reviewing the one photograph, Council expressed concern about I the appearance of the structure ... the air conditioners on the windows, the starkness of the building giving it an instititional look and felt that adequate landscaping seemed to be lacking. It was noted by Mr. Lazelle that each locale is different and the one to be constructed in Arcadia would be consistent with the desires of the City. Ways of breaking up the starkness were discussed and noted, i. e., mature trees and an attractive treatment of the windows. CLOSED SESSION Both Messrs. Carr and Lazelle expressed appreciation for the opportunity of making their presentations and assured Council of their desire and intent to work with Council in every way possible to bring their projects to the City. Council then entered a CLOSED SESSION, reconvened and adjourned sine die at 7:30 p; m. ATTEST: ~~~ Christjne Van Maanen, City Clerk I 4/21/B7 -2-
