January 16, 2001 at 6:00 p,m, in the Administrative Conference Room of the City Hall.

Ms, Dahlstorm reminded everyone that the Annual Spring Awards judging'will take place on

Mayor Kovacic presented the Mayor's Certificate of Commendation to 2001 Rose Court
Princesses Nini Jiang and Crystal Uribe, both Arcadia High School seniors, and thanked
them for representing the City of Arcadia in the 2001 Pasadena Tournament of Roses
Parade, "

Mayor Kovacic presented the January, 2001 Mayor's Community Service Award to Dave and
Keppie Sullivan and thanked them for bringing a genuine sense of caring to local activities
and enthusiastically and willingly contributing to better the community through volunteer
efforts, Dave has been an Indian Guide Leader and Cub Scout Den Leader, He has given
the "Growing Up Talk" to boys at Highland Oaks an\.! then District wide for three years,
Keppie works for the Arcadia Unified School District as an Activities Assistant at Arcadia High
School. She served as PT A President at Highland Oaks Elementary School and Arcadia
High School. She is a 10-year member of the Assistance League of Arcadia and has served
as Bargain Box Chairman, Social Chairman, Publicity Chairmen and Assisteens Chairman,

~laY(Jr Kova.:ic: prestlnted the January" 2001 Mayor's Youth Service Award to Michael
Hawkins, the Arcadia Educational Foundation President, stating, this year marks the 20th
anniversary of the Arcadia Educational Foundation, AEF was started in response to the tax
cuts of Proposition 13 in order to provide some of the programs that were no longer
supported by taxes, The AEF is made up of parents and interested members of the
community who actively support exceptional learning experiences for the youth, Since 1982,
the foundation has raised over $5 million for the Arcadia Unified Sohool District and would
like to grow to the point where the Foundation gives $1 million to schools, Mayor Kovacic
thanked the AEF which believes that a superior education is achieved through a productive
partnership with the Aroadia Unified School District, the Aroadia Eduoational Foundation and
the community,

MATTERS FROM ELECTED OFFICIALS
Mayor Pro tern Segal expressed appreciation to the fourteen Arcadia Police Reserve Officers
for their effort and lime in support of the Arcadia Police Department by donating
approximately 4700 hours of work during the year, Mr. Segal noted that it would have cost
the City in excess of a one hundred thousand dollars to replace donated time with working
personnel.

Mr, Segal encouraged everyone to attend the Arcadia High School Music Club Spaghetti
Dinner on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at 4:00 p,m, Proceeds will benefit the Music Club and
different music activities at the high school. . -
Council member Marshall thanked Jessica Anderson and Jerry Collins of the Parks and
Recreation Department for hosting "Skate-a-bration" at the Arcadia Community Center: -It
was a wonderful event with 350 participants, Ms, Marshall hoped that the plan for a skate-
board park will come along and the youngsters will have a place to skateboard,

Ms, Marshall also attended the Arcadia Police Reserve Association Dinner and thanked the
volunteers for putting so much time in support of the Police Department and saving taxpayers
money,
Councilmember Marshall shared a line on a marquee at a church in Arcadia: "The bible is
your best TV guide",
Council member Chang read an appreciation letter from Friends of Foster Children, to the
Mayor, City Council, City employees and Arcadia residents for supporting the Sugar Plum
Project. ' ..
Dr, Chang expressed condolences to family and friends of Stephanie Craig, an ,Arcadia
Police Dispatcher. The memorial service for Stephanie was held on Monday, January 12, at
the Emmanuel Assembly of God Church,
KOVACIC ' Mayor Kovacic read a statement with regard to a Stage 3 power alert, which could result in
(Power Outage) brownouts throughout the City, The City of Arcadia has no control over the location of power

(Skate-a-bration) In response to Mayor Kovacic's query, Jessica Anderson provided a brief report and a video
tape with regard to the Skate-a-bration event, which was held on January 7, 2001 at the
Arcadia Comm,unity Center, and thank~d everyone who participated in this event.
