DATE: June 4, 2013
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Sara Somogyi, Director of Recreation and Community Services
By: Dan Belling, Recreation Supervisor
SUBJECT: AUTHORIZE AND DIRECT THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE A
CONTRACT WITH UNIFIED NUTRIMEALS TO PROVIDE THE SENIOR
MEALS PROGRAM FROM JULY 1, 2013, THROUGH JUNE 30, 2014, IN
AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $60,000.
Recommendation: Approve
SUMMARY
The City of Arcadia Senior Nutrition Program provides a warm, healthy meal and social
interaction each weekday to approximately 60 seniors. The fee for the lunch is $2.00
for individuals who are over 55 or disabled and $4.00 for individuals 50 -54 years of age.
On July 1, 2012, the City executed a contract with Unified Nutrimeals to provide lunches
for the senior meals program through June 30, 2013. The contract was executed in an
amount not to exceed $56,000 and included an option for (3) one year renewal periods
thereafter, at the City's discretion. Approval of this agenda item would extend the
contract for one year through June 30, 2014.
DISCUSSION
The congregate meals program is offered Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. to
adults 55 years of age and older. The primary intent of the program is to meet one -third
of the participant's daily nutritional intake and the menu pattern must uphold strict Los
Angeles County Department of Public Health standards. In addition, the program offers
a social outlet to participants and a way to reduce isolation by building companionship
and peer support.
Senior citizen participants have been satisfied with the overall quality and service
delivery of the meal program provided by Unified Nutrimeals. The caterer is based in
Vernon, California and currently serves about 35,000 senior meals per week in
numerous locations and is well equipped to continue providing service to the City of

Arcadia. In addition to the current fiscal year, Unified Nutrimeals served as the meal
provider to the City of Arcadia during Fiscal Years 2008 -10.
FISCAL IMPACT
The proposed cost to the City will be $3.28 per meal, up $0.10 per meal from the
current contract. The increase is due to increased transit and food production costs,
which is permissible based on the existing contract. The agreement for Fiscal Year
2013 -14 will include an amount not to exceed $60,000. The budget to cover the cost of
this program is created utilizing three funding sources: CDBG funds, participant fees,
and the General Fund. Over the next fiscal year, $21,000 has been budgeted in the
General Fund, which includes a $2,000 increase to account for the increased cost for
the senior lunches.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council authorize and direct the City Manager to
execute a contract with Unified Nutrimeals to provide the senior meals program from
July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014, in an amount not to exceed $60,000.
Approved,
Dominic Lazzaret
