HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 2m - A Gift from the Arcadia Public Library FoundationV~ � GPLIFORNf 9��f _ a ❑--p..... a glue 5, 903 "'°ntty °f STAFF REPORT Library and Museum Services Department DATE: June 18, 2013 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Mary Beth Hayes, Director of Library & Museum Services SUBJECT: RECEIVE A GIFT OF $16,900 FROM THE ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION FOR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES AT THE LIBRARY Recommendation: Accept donation SUMMARY The Arcadia Public Library Foundation ( "Foundation "), as part of its ongoing mission to support the Library's goals and objectives, is donating $16,900 to the Library for programs and services. DISCUSSION The funds being donated will be used for the following purposes: • Kaleidoscope Music Concert Series: This very popular series will include three concerts featuring world -class musicians. The series coordinator, Paul Stein, is a violinist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. • English Conversation Class: Funds will be used to provide tutoring materials and the monthly Easy English News for the English Conversation Class held at the Library each Monday. These materials enrich the class experience for both the tutors and the approximately 100 students who attend each week. • Chinese language materials: Funds will be used to purchase additional books and DVDs for the very popular Chinese Language Collection. • Live Homework Help /Tutor.com: This will be the eighth year of providing access to this online resource which provides excellent one on one online tutoring to students of all ages. For the fifth year in a row, the total cost will be shared equally by the Library and the Arcadia Unified School District. Accept Gift from the Arcadia Public Library Foundation June 18, 2013 Page 2 of 2 • Special furniture for the Jerry Broadwell Children's Room: Funds will be used to purchase a special custom made mommy and me chair that will accommodate a child with an adult. All gifts to the Library over $1,000 are subject to approval by the City Council pursuant to City Charter Section 809(d). FISCAL IMPACT Receipt of these funds will provide $16,900 for Library programs, materials and services. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council receive a gift of $16,900 from the Arcadia Public Library Foundation for programs and services at the Library.
