SUBJECT: ALLOCATE $38,000 FROM THE PARK AND RECREATION FACILITIES
FUND FOR FURNISHINGS, FIXTURES, AND EQUIPMENT FOR THE
MUSEUM EDUCATION CENTER
Recommendation: Approve
SUMMARY
On June 4, 2013, the City Council approved a contract with TKE Construction, Inc
(TKE) for design /build services for the Museum Education Center. While sufficient
funds were approved for design and construction of the building, no funds were
allocated for general furnishings, fixtures, or equipment. The Museum Education
Center is slated for completion in May 2014. It is recommended that City Council
authorize the allocation of $38,000 from the Park and Recreation Facilities Fund to
allow for the purchase of furnishings, fixtures, and equipment to meet the functional
objectives of the building.
DISCUSSION
The contract with TKE for design /build services for the Museum Education Center was
for $797,581, plus a 10% contingency. The Arcadia Historical Museum Foundation
contributed $500,000 toward the construction of this building with the remaining contract
amount to be covered by the Park and Recreation Facilities Fund. No funds were
allocated for general furnishings, fixtures, or equipment. Staff from the Library &
Museum Services, Public Works Services, and Recreation and Community Services
Departments have developed a list of needed items in order for the building to be
operational upon completion of the structure. Specifically, tables and chairs for the
classrooms and gallery, kitchen appliances, storage shelving, a computer and
telephones for the reception area, trash cans, floor mats and clocks are needed to make
the facility fully functioning for a wide variety of uses and age groups. Where possible,
items may be obtained from elsewhere in the City; however, an allocation of $38,000 is
requested to cover necessary expenditures for furnishings, fixtures, and equipment in
this new facility.
