GQLIFORN —9 F mcooo.aica Au6usf 5, 1903 STAFF REPORT Recreation and Community Services Department DATE: August 19, 2014 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Sara Somogyi, Director of Recreation and Community Services By: Ryan Wright, Assistant Director of Recreation & Community Services SUBJECT: DONATION OF NEW SOCCER GOALS FOR THE CIVIC CENTER SOCCER FIELD BY AYSO REGION 2 VALUED AT $5,000 Recommendation: Accept SUMMARY AYSO Region 2 utilizes the Civic Center Soccer Field to host practices and games for boys and girls on a year round basis. As the primary user of the field and soccer goals, the AYSO Region 2 Board of Directors has approved the purchase of two, new permanent goals that they would like to donate to the City of Arcadia, the cost of the goals is anticipated to be $5,000. DISCUSSION Since the installation of the new synthetic turf field in 2011, teams are able to play much more often than a traditional turf field. The soccer goals are utilized daily by a variety of youth and adult organizations, City contract classes, and the general public. Of these, AYSO Region 2 is the main user of the Civic Center soccer field, scheduling practices and games for both boys and girls on a year round basis. AYSO has proven to be a strong community partner and respectful user of the field to ensure proper maintenance and safety requirements are followed. In addition, AYSO realizes the soccer goals at the Civic Center soccer field are in need of replacement after ongoing efforts to replace hardware have proven temporary at best. Based upon a strong community relationship between AYSO Region 2 and the City, the AYSO Board of Directors approved an expense of approximately $5,000 in order to purchase and donate new soccer goals to the Civic Center Soccer Field. The City of Arcadia will continue to provide ongoing maintenance and repairs. AYSO Donation Soccer Goals By AYSO Region 2 August 19, 2014 Page 2 OF 2 On August 13, 2014, the Recreation and Parks Commission reviewed and accepted the proposal unanimously. FISCAL IMPACT AYSO Region 2 will purchase and provide the goals to the City, while City staff will continue to maintain and repair the goals in the future. The overall cost to the City will be reduced, as repairs on the current goals are more frequent than they would be with new goals and the City will avoid the cost of purchasing new goals in the near term. With normal use, permanent soccer goals typically last 15 years or longer. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council accept the donation of two, new soccer goals for the Civic Center soccer field by AYSO Region 2 valued at $5,000. Approved.
