By: Ryan Wright, Assistant Director of Recreation & Community Services
SUBJECT: DONATION OF $1,000 FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON TO
THE RECREATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT FOR
THE TECH TALK PROGRAM
Recommendation: Accept
SUMMARY
The Southern California Edison local public affairs office contributes to various
programs serving the needs of the community. This year, the Recreation and
Community Services Department's Tech Talk Program was chosen to receive a $1,000
donation.
BACKGROUND
In May of 2012, "Tech Talk" was introduced as an innovative, intergenerational
technology program pairing up senior citizens with tech savvy teenage volunteers
known as "Volunteens" who are registered volunteers of the Recreation and Community
Services Department. Tech Talk provides opportunities for high school students to
share their skills and knowledge, flipping the traditional teaching model with young
people serving as the teachers and mentors to older adults. The idea of the program is
to encourage social interactions between the different generations. Southern California
Edison has provided a donation of $1,000 toward the program. Pursuant to City policy,
donations of $1,000 or higher require City Council approval.
