HomeMy WebLinkAboutMaterials Distributed at Meeting To the Mayor and Councilmen of the City of Arcadia:
On, February 12,the Arcadia Beautiful Committee was praised for the wonderful and unique job they do and the amazing
impact it has in our Community of Homes. Everyone had positive things to say about the role of this committee and its
impact to the city and its residents.
Shortly after, the Arcadia Beautiful Committee was shocked by the announcement made by Councilman Chandler that the
City Council was writing a resolution to dissolve the Arcadia Beautiful Commission. The 'Commissioners"are to be
replaced by a"citizens volunteer committee."
We would like to express the sentiment of the Committee at this time. We believe the following:
1)There is always a need to change when things are not working and searching for improvement in the process. In this
case, the committee is open to including more'volunteer citizens" as part of the process.
2) For all of us that are involved in numerous committees and have worked with volunteers all of our lives, we know that
when the time comes, volunteers have all kinds of excuses and they DO NOT deliver. Being a Commissioner assures that
the service is delivered in an accurate and reliable way because Commissioners have been appointed to commit.
3)We also believe that the city staff will have to invest much more man power time recruiting, training and contacting
"volunteers"for all the different judges for every event with no guarantee that they will show up-or really commit.
4) Furthermore, in a rapidly, changing and diverse society, the stability of the members of the Commission will assure the
city to keep the traditions of the city. We believe that this might be hampered when we are relying in a transient-volunteer
judging committee.
We would have appreciated for the Council to have addressed us for an opinion about the matter, especially as we are
homeowners in the fine city.
Respectfully Submitted,
