STAFF REPORT
Recreation and Community Services Department
DATE: May 5, 2015
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Sara Somogyi, Director of Recreation and Community Services
By: Dan Belling, Recreation Supervisor
SUBJECT: EXTENSION TO THE PURCHASE ORDER WITH UNIFIED
NUTRIMEALS TO PROVIDE THE SENIOR MEALS PROGRAM
Recommendation: Approve
SUMMARY
The City of Arcadia Senior Nutrition Program provides a warm, healthy meal each
weekday to approximately 65 seniors daily who pay $2.00 and enjoy the social
interaction with others during lunch. The second year of a renewable purchase order
with Unified Nutrimeals will conclude on June 30, 2015. It is recommended the City
Council extend the purchase order for Fiscal Year 2015 -16.
DISCUSSION
The congregate meals program is offered Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. to older
adults, 55 years of age and older. The primary intent of the program is to meet one -third
of the participants' daily nutritional intake and the menu pattern must uphold strict Los
Angeles County Department of Public Health standards. In addition, the program offers
a social outlet to participants and a way to reduce isolation by building companionship
and peer support.
The Recreation and Community Services Department and senior citizen participants
have been satisfied with the overall quality and service delivery of the meal program
and catering services provided by Unified Nutrimeals. The caterer is based in Vernon,
California and currently serves about 35,000 senior meals per week in numerous
locations and is well equipped to continue providing service to the City of Arcadia. In
addition to the last two fiscal years, Unified Nutrimeals served as the meal provider to
the City of Arcadia during Fiscal Years 2008 -10.

Unified Nutrimeals Purchase Order
May 5, 2015
The current purchase order provides the City of Arcadia the option to renew the
purchase order on a year -by -year basis for a maximum of three one year periods. Fiscal
Year 2015 -16 would be the third and final amendment to this purchase order.
FISCAL IMPACT
The proposed cost to the City will be $3.60 per meal, up 12 cents per meal from the
current purchase order, but a necessary increase due to transit and food production
costs. The purchase order for Fiscal Year 2015 -16 will include an amount not to exceed
$60,000. Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding in the amount
of $31,800 will be the major source of funding. The remainder will be covered by the
General Fund ($21,000) and participant fees ($7,200). The proposed Fiscal Year 2015-
16 General Fund budget is sufficient to cover the cost of the senior meals program.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended the City Council approve a one year extension to the purchase order
with Unified Nutrimeals to provide the senior meals program from July 1, 2015 to June
30, 2016 in an amount not to exceed $60,000.
Approved,
Dominic Laa
City Manager
