VIA EMAIL: ikruckeberg@ci.arcadia.ca.us RE: ZONING CODE UPDATES Dear Council The Downtown Arcadia AIA respectfully requests you reconsider your hold on zoning code updates in commercial areas. Downtown Arcadia AIA has worked hard in cooperation, side by side, with city staff to come up with a zoning code update that will help DAIA attain its goals and realize its vision of a vibrant downtown. DAIA Board is a collaborative effort of 17 property owners, business owners, city staff, elected officials and members of the community. We all share a passion to have a downtown that draws positive attention to the City of Arcadia. The City Council in 2013 graciously paid thousands of dollars to a consultant to help us form this assessment district. City Council undertook this"investment" in the hopes that the Downtown businesses would drive a revitalization of the area. We agree that this assessment district is one of many components to a successful downtown. There is no "magic pill" or "silver bullet"that is going to transform our downtown and bring it up to the standard we all have envisioned. It will take many different pieces to create the downtown we all want. One of the building blocks is zoning. Zoning for retail/entertainment will send a message to small business owners from other areas that downtown Arcadia is ready to make a change and is committed to that change. With the City's adoption of zoning that restricts uses to those that are necessary to create a pedestrian friendly atmosphere, desirable businesses will be more inclined to come to Arcadia. We have an opportunity to acquire the event planner from Monrovia and begin running a weekly street fair that will instantaneously make-over our downtown. We feel it is imperative to continue working on the zoning code changes for the Downtown. Without the zoning change, it will be a waste of our time and money to have a street fair to show off vacant buildings and lack luster businesses. More than anything, DAIA wants to create excitement in the downtown. We hope to attract businesses that are top revenue producers for the City of Arcadia. We hope that you will not throw away the money you have already invested in our downtown and make the cash free investment in our zoning change. We hope you will imagine a downtown that overshadows Rusnak, Santa Anita Park and the mall and help us reach our goals and fuel our success. We wouldn't have gotten this far without your support. We seek your assistance in making these critical zoning changes in order to create a framework for the success of Arcadia's long desired downtown. Respectfully, Sharon Logan Chair- Business Attraction Committee Downtown Arcadia Improvement Association
