FOR THE PUBLIC WORKS SERVICE CENTER CARPORT STRUCTURE REPAIR PROJECT AS COMPLETE Recommendation: Approve SUMMARY On March 17, 2015, the City Council approved a contract with Avaz Construction, Inc. in the amount of $54,400 for the Public Works Service Center Carport Structure Repair Project. The terms and conditions of this project have been complied with and the work has been performed to the satisfaction of the Project Manager for a total project cost of $59,101.69. This amount reflects the original contract amount of $54,400 plus one contract change order totaling $4,701.69, or 8.64% of the original contract amount. It is recommended that the City Council accept all work performed by Avaz Construction, Inc. for the Public Works Service Center Carport Structure Repair Project as complete and authorize the final payment to be made in accordance with the contract documents, subject to the retention of $2,955.08. DISCUSSION On August 19, 2014, a City owned compressed natural gas (CNG) street sweeper caught on fire and exploded, resulting in extensive damage to a carport structure that houses equipment and fleet vehicles for the Public Works Services Department (“PWSD”). As a result, the City Council approved a contract with Avaz Construction, Inc. for the repair and reconstruction of the damaged carport structure for continued use. The PWSD had a structural engineering company assess the structural damage and provide engineering construction plans to be utilized for the completion of the repairs. The work completed under this project included the replacement of a damaged block Accept Carport Structural Repair Project September 15, 2015 Page 2 of 2 wall, steel beams, upright support beams, roof decking, power washing of the concrete block, and repainting of all metal surfaces. During the project, it was discovered that an installation of a steel ledger, not provided under the original project plans, was necessary to attach the end of the roof deck to the existing structure. The contractor furnished and installed the new steel ledger to adequately secure the new roof deck. Total Change Order Amount $4,701.69 The terms and conditions of this contract have been complied with and the work has been performed to the satisfaction of the Project Manager. Avaz Construction, Inc. completed the work as defined in the project plans and specifications in an efficient manner. FISCAL IMPACT The City’s insurance company reviewed the claim for the damaged carport structure and has agreed to reimburse the City for all repair costs. The total cost for this project, including one change order, is $59,101.69. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council accept all work performed by Avaz Construction, Inc. for the Public Works Service Center Carport Structure Repair Project as complete and authorize the final payment to be made in accordance with the contract documents, subject to the retention of $2,955.08.
