Since such a letter would be signed by the Mayor and sent on behalf of the City of Arcadia, it is before you tonight for review and consideration. DISCUSSION Los Angeles is one of five cities submitting a bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, the others being Paris, Rome, Hamburg, and Budapest. The bidding process is intensive and comprehensive, with the first part of the candidate bid books being due to the International Olympic Committee In February 2016. The Los Angeles Bid Committee would like to include letters of support from southland cities in its bid package. This support is of a general nature; it does not commit the City to anything, nor does it make statements or draw a conclusion as to any benefits or hardships that may be incurred by the City of Los Angeles hosting the Olympic Games. The draft letter that accompanies this report was suggested by Mayor Garcetti’s Office. Since the letter is written on behalf of the City of Arcadia, which implies the support of the entire community, it is being presented tonight for full City Council consideration. Providing a letter of support at this time does not have any negative impacts on Arcadia, and it would assist the Bid Committee in bringing the Olympic Games to Los Angeles – a feat that could reap significant economic and social benefit to the region. When the Olympic Games were in Los Angeles in 1984, the Santa Anita Race Track successfully hosted some of the Equestrian Events, which is remembered fondly. As such, it is recommended that the City Council authorize the Mayor to sign and submit the attached letter on behalf of the City of Arcadia. FISCAL IMPACT Expressing Arcadia’s support in the form of the attached letter has no financial impact on the City. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council authorize the Mayor to sign and send a letter of support for the Los Angeles Bid Committee’s efforts to bring the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to Los Angeles. Attachment: Draft Letter November XX, 2015 Mr. Casey Wasserman Chairman, Los Angeles 2024 Bid Committee 10960 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1050 Los Angeles, CA 90024 Dear Mr. Wasserman: On behalf of the City of Arcadia, I am writing to offer our support to the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic Bid Committee as it submits a bid to the International Olympic Committee to bring the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to Los Angeles. I am confident that the Greater Los Angeles area would make an ideal location for the Olympics. Los Angeles has proven it can host successful and profitable Games that inspire the world and bring our communities together. Having the 2024 Games here would build upon our history with the Olympic Movement and the positive legacies of the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. The City of Arcadia is proud to stand with Mayor Eric Garcetti, the City of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles 2024 Bid Committee in your effort to bring the Olympics back to Southern California. Sincerely, D R A F T Gary A. Kovacic Mayor
