HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 2b: Direction Regarding the Name of the Joint Use Gymnasium at Dana Middle SchoolDATE: May 4, 2010 SUMMARY DISCUSSION STAFF REPORT Recreation and Community Services Department TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Sara Somogyi, Director of Recreation and Community Services SUBJECT: RECOMMENDATION OF THE NAME OF THE JOINT USE GYMNASIUM AT DANA MIDDLE SCHOOL Recommended Action: Select a name to present to the Arcadia Unified School District for the name of the gymnasium at Dana Middle School. Since April 2006, the City of Arcadia and the Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) have been working jointly to build a gymnasium on a middle school campus. Dana Middle School was chosen as the site to be suited for the project. The groundbreaking ceremony for this project took place in November of 2009. The construction of this project is anticipated to take approximately one year to complete. One important detail for the project will be the name of the facility. Since this is a joint use facility, staff will be working closing with the school district personnel to come to a consensus on the name of the facility. This evening staff will discuss the three most common names that have been talked about in previous conversations for the name of the facility. The name of the facility will be on the wall of the facing the First Avenue street entrance. The dedication plaque for the facility will be on the side wall next to the main doors of the facility. In bold print below you will see the recommendations for the facility name. The name will be listed in a larger font than the second line under the main name which describes this is a joint use facility between the Arcadia Unified School District and the City of Arcadia. In January 2010, the Arcadia Unified School District and the City of Arcadia held a Special Meeting on Joint Use Facilities. At the meeting, the City Council spoke about the possibility to call the facility: The Dana Gym Arcadia Unified School District and the City of Arcadia The Recreation and Parks Commissioners made a motion at their meeting held on April 14, 2010 to possibility call the facility: Gymnasium Arcadia Unified School District and the City of Arcadia The third option to consider the same general concept, said in a different order. The Gymnasium at Dana Arcadia Unified School District and the City of Arcadia RECOMMENDATION Staff is requesting direction from City Council for a recommendation from the three aforementioned facility names to present to the Arcadia Unified School District for the name of the gymnasium at Dana Middle School. .D z..eo t erm. , ,. -, f Donald Penman, City Manager APPROVED:
