SUBJECT: Elect a new Chair and Vice Chair of the Planning Commission for Fiscal
Year 2017-2018
DISCUSSION
Each year, the Planning Commission usually reorganize in/or around June and elects a
new Chair and Vice Chair. The Commission may accept nominations or elect Vice-Chair
Ken Chan as the new Chair, and Commissioner Brad Thompson as the Vice-Chair, who
are next in line to serve.
Staff thanks Chairman Lin for serving as the Chair of the Planning Commission this past
year. He has done a fantastic job in leading the Commission.
Additionally, Commissioner Chiao has resigned from his position. He is moving to San
Marino. He will be greatly missed. As a result, the City Council will be appointing a new
Commissioner. The City will be accepting applications until September 22, 2017. The
notice for the vacancy (attached) was published in the Arcadia Weekly, and posted on
the City’s website, at Recreation, Library, Council Chambers, and City Clerk’s office.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Commission selects a new Chair and Vice-Chair to serve
through June 2018.

PLANNING COMMISSION VACANCY
The Arcadia City Clerk’s Office is currently accepting applications for
the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission is composed of
five members, each member serves a four year term. This position is
to fill a vacancy ending June 30, 2018. To serve on a City board or
commission, you must be 18 years or older, a registered voter and a
resident of the City of Arcadia.
The Planning Commission is a valuable intermediary between the
public and the City Council. As the City Council’s advisory board on
land use planning, the Commission will hold public hearings to
consider land use matters such as use permits, development, Specific
Plan, historic preservation related to environmental review process,
and text amendments to the Development Code that pertains to a
variety of matters affecting the physical development of the City.
The City provides Planning Commissioners with training opportunities
to learn about the duties and responsibilities of a Commissioner, and to
learn about the various subject matters related to land use. Regular
Planning Commission meetings are held on the second and fourth
Tuesday of the month at the City Council Chamber at 7:00 p.m.
Interested candidates may obtain an application from the City Clerk’s
Office, Arcadia City Hall, 240 W. Huntington Drive or the City’s website
at www.ArcadiaCA.gov. Arcadia Board and Commission members
serve without compensation. The deadline for submitting an application
to the City Clerk’s office is the close of business on Friday, September
22, 2017, 4:30 pm.
