000. ARCHITECTURAL TERMINOLOGY
beam: a rigid structural member whose prime function is to carry and transfer transverse
loads across a span to the supports: joists, girders or rafters.
chevron: a symmetrical "v" shape that represents a triangle with its third side removed.
cladding: material used for wall exterior
dentils: series of closely spaced ornamental rectangular blocks resembling teeth
dormer: subunits interrupting the slope of a roof resembling miniature houses with their
own walls, roofs, and windows
gabled roof: roof shape with two sloping planes supported at their ends by triangular,
upward extensions of two walls know as gables.
gambrel: an arched roof shape composed of planes joined with ridge lines.
half-timbering: filled wood frames
modillions: example of Classical moldings
ogee: a double curve resembling and "S" in shape
parapet: a wall that extends above the roof edge
pediment: a low-pitched triangular gable above a facade; a triangular gable end of the
roof above the horizontal cornice
broken pediment: the top of a pediment is scooped out.
pilaster: a partial pier or column that is embedded in a flat wall and projects slightly.
quoins: brick detail at the corners of wall junctions.
rafter: one of a series of inclines members which supports the sheathing to which a roof
covering is fixed.
ribbon window: three or more contiguous windows also called clerestory windows
sash: framework of panes in a window or door.
segmental: describes the shape of an architectural opening where the sides are straight
and the top is rounded.
transom: upper third sash of a window or door unit.
