Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, setting, and boundaries) Arcadia County Park was opened in 1937. It contains several buildings and structures but none of the buildings is as significant as the landscape as a whole. The major structures are the Senior citizens Clubhouse, the Picnic Kitchens, the Golf Club house and the clubhouse between the swimming pool and tennis courts. All of these buildings have been altered since their original construction, but the park as a whole retains its design and cultural significance as a site for community recreation. The park was built by Federal Works Progress Administration labor on the site of the old Ross Field Balloon School. *P3b. Resource Attributes: (List attributes and codesL HP13 HP30 HP35 *P4. At the height of the Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the Works Progress Administration as part of a drive to relieve unemployment and maintain the nation's economy. A host of programs came under the heading of the WPA including the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Civic Works Administration, the Federal Writers, Theater and Arts projects. Construction projects included large scale projects like the Boulder (now Hoover) Dam, the Tennessee Valley Authority and smaller projects like schools, hospitals, playgrounds and public sculptures. Covering 185 acres, at its opening, the park contained a golf course, swimming pool, bath house, 8 tennis courts, baseball diamond with grandstands, two softball diamonds, bowling greens, children's playgrounds and public picnic grounds. The playground contained iron cast equipment from the WPA blacksmith, a wading pool and clubhouse. The picnic grounds are extensive with a sheltered barbecue pit and a stone work public kitchen with gas stoves. One of the tennis courts and both softball diamonds had night lighting. The swimming pool was built to Olympic standards and used a recirculating filtration system. The golf course sprinkling system was state of the art in its time, with 21 miles of underground water mains. The course itself was considered on of the best in the country. The fact that it was a public course added to its appeal. Materials for construction throughout the park were recycled from the old Balloon School hangars and barracks. When the park was dedicated in 1937, its centerpiece was a statue of the Hugo Reid Family, the first owners of Rancho Santa Anita. In 1941, a statue was built to honor veterans and victims of the Spanish-American War; this piece is now listed as a California landmark. In 1961, the Rotary Club founded the construction of Memorial Fountain .r DPR 523 (ACROBAT WEBDOC Posted 111981 - Kequireu miVnnauUii State of California -- The Resources Agency Primary #_- DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION HRI # ------------------- CONTINUATION SHEET Trnomial--------County Park 405 Santa Anita Ave 3 3 Page ____ of "Resource Name or #(Assigned by recorder) 4/26/02 Cultural Resource Arrangement, L.
