HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 12d - Accept Donation of $12,000 from the Fiends of Arcadia Public Library DATE: July 17, 2018 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Darlene Bradley, Director of Library & Museum Services SUBJECT: DONATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $12,000 FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR ONLINE HOMEWORK HELP SERVICE Recommendation: Accept SUMMARY The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library wish to donate $12,000 to the Arcadia Public Library for one-half of the subscription cost of Brainfuse, the online homework help service for students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. It is recommended that the City Council accept the donation. DISCUSSION In accordance with City Administrative Policy, all donations in excess of $1,000 shall be approved by City Council. The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library wish to help support the Arcadia Public Library for the following purpose: Purchase one-half of the subscription for Brainfuse, in partnership with the Arcadia Unified School District and to provide real time tutoring to students by certified higher education tutors that have also completed a background and reference check. In addition to one-on-one homework help, this subscription also provides state aligned skill building and a 24-hour writing lab. The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library and the Arcadia Unified School District each pay one-half of the cost of the $24,000 subscription. This service provides online assistance to students daily from 2:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Accept Gift of $12,000 from Friends of the Arcadia Public Library for On-Line Homework Help Services July 17, 2018 Page 2 of 2 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT The proposed action does not constitute a project under the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”), and it can be seen with certainty that it will have no impact on the environment. Thus, this matter is exempt under CEQA. FISCAL IMPACT These funds come from the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library memberships and book sales in their Friends Book Store. This $12,000 donation makes possible online homework service for the community over and above what is allotted in through the City’s General Fund. Without this generous funding, the Library would be una ble to provide a reliable and vetted homework program. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended the City Council accept a donation in the amount of $12,000 from the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library for an online homework help service.
