FROM: Darlene Bradley, Director of Library & Museum Services
SUBJECT: DONATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $40,000 FROM THE FRIENDS OF
THE ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR PROGRAMS, COLLECTIONS,
AND SERVICES FOR THE LIBRARY
Recommendation: Accept
SUMMARY
The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library are offering a gift of $40,000 for programs,
collections, and services for the Library. It is recommended that the City Council accept
the gift.
DISCUSSION
The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library (the “Friends”), as part of an ongoing mission
to support the Library’s goals and objectives, would like to donate $40,000 to the
Library. In accordance with City Administrative Policy, all donations in excess of $1,000
shall be approved by City Council.
The Friends gift will provide support for the Library’s children’s programming; in
particular, the always very popular annual Children’s Summer Reading Program. In
addition, the Friends funds will be used to support other progr ams throughout the year
to provide supplies, incentives, performers, and books for children, teen, and adult
programs.
The funds donated by the Friends help the Library and the City to provide a high level of
materials and services for the citizens of Arcadia beyond the current capacity of the
City’s General Fund. Without ongoing support and financial assistance of the Friends,
the array of Library programs and services offered to Arcadians would be diminished in
quality and quantity. The children’s, midd le school, and teen summer reading programs
would be much less enticing and staff would not be able to keep children and teens
reading at the same level all summer long so that they are ready to return to school
each fall ready to read at or above their previous grade reading level. The Friends
