SUBJECT: 300 W. Las Flores Ave.: Preservation requirements for one Olive Tree
A tree survey of the property that was completed in April 2017 determined that one European
Olive tree (Olea europea), is the only Protected Tree located on or near the property. It is located
in the front yard area. It is a multi -trunked specimen with four primary leaders that each measure
greater than ten inches in diameter, with a cumulative trunk diameter of 42 inches. The tree
appears to be in very good health and condition. Current photos of the tree are attached with this
letter.
European Olives are perhaps the easiest trees to transplant due to their extremely high tolerance
of root pruning. Most of the time old mature trees are roughly dug from old orchards with root
masses that don't extend more than a foot beyond the root crown. The roots are wrapped in
burlap and they are trucked to their destination, planted and modestly irrigated; and the vast
majority successfully establish. This being said, the proposed construction encroachments will
have little or no impact on the tree as long as the work is done in a professional manner and a
Protection Zone is established and maintained throughout the project.
Attached is a section of the site plan where the tree is located. The recommended location of the
protective fencing is drawn, and I recommend that the existing river rocks around the tree remain
in place for added protection. The fence shall be installed prior to site clearing and demolition
and remain until the landscape installation phase. This information will be conveyed to the
Construction Manager.
Please feel free to call or email me with any questions regarding this encroachment. I have been
retained as the project's arborist of record and plan to monitor all encroachments.
Sincerely,
Michael Crane
