HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 11d - Donation of $2,000 for Educational Programs at the Gilb Museum DATE: April 2, 2019 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Darlene Bradley, Director Library & Museum Services SUBJECT: DONATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $2,000 FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM AND THE HAKKA FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AT THE GILB MUSEUM Recommendation: Accept SUMMARY The Friends of the Museum and the Hakka Foundation are offering a gift of $2,000 to the Gilb Museum to provide educational programs by the Museum for the community. It is recommended that the City Council accept this donation. DISCUSSION The Friends of the Museum, as part of its ongoing mission to support the Museum’s goals and objectives, are donating $2,000 to the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. The Friends of the Museum board members raise this money th rough memberships to the Friends of the Museum, and in seeking donations from foundations such as the Hakka Foundation. The Museum is the City entity that collects, preserves, displays, and recognizes Arcadia’s rich heritage, past and present, for the community to enjoy in a shared public setting for learning, reflection, and discussion. The Friends of the Museum and Hakka Foundation gift will provide the Museum with funds to offer some new educational science and history programs that are directly related to local history in Arcadia. This will include activities, demonstrations, and an up - close look at various fields of science as they relate to local history with an up-close look at some of the highlights of the Museum’s collections and exhibits. The funds donated by the Friends of the Museum help the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage and the City of Arcadia provide a high level of Arcadia historical materials, exhibits, programs, and preservation for the citizens of Arcadia beyond the current capacity of the City’s General Fund. Without the ongoing support of the Friends of the Donation of $2,000 from the Friends of the Museum for Education Programs April 2, 2019 Page 2 of 2 Museum, the array of services, programs, collection care and preservation would be diminished in quality and quantity now and for future generations. All gifts over $1,000 are subject to approval by the City Council pursuant to City Charter Section 809(d). ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS The proposed action does not constitute a project under the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”), and it can be seen with certainty that it will have no impact on the environment. Thus, this matter is exempt under CEQA. FISCAL IMPACT Receipt of this $2,000 gift will provide adequate funding to begin some new hands-on educational programming that will encourage the community to discover its loc al history in a fun and interactive way. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended the City Council accept a donation in the amount of $2,000 from the Friends of the Museum and the Hakka Foundation for educational programs at the Gilb Museum.
