MEETING MINUTES
JANUARY 12, 2017
ARCADIA BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson J. Shimmin called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. in the
Council Chambers Conference Room.
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Jan Shimmin, Don Fandry, Burton Brink, Ethel Laczko,
Barbara Lyle, Robert Miller, and Lee Shimmin.
ABSENT: None
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
PUBLIC COMMENTS — None.
REPORTS FROM ARCADIA BEAUTIFUL COMMISSIONERS — Commissioner L. Shimmin
stated that the Historical Marker Dedication is scheduled for January 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at
the Arcadia Transit Plaza, and he would be providing a tour of the Walk of Champions plaques
following the event. Commissioner Laczko requested to debrief the Santa Squad event at next
commission meeting.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON — Councilmember Tay stated that the
Verizon cell tower item was supposed to be on the agenda of the January 17, 2017 Council
meeting but was moved to the February 7, 2017 Council meeting since Verizon requested an
extension. Councilmember Tay noted the Chinese Lunar New Year is on January 28, 2017,
and it is the Year of the Rooster.
1. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Reoular Meeting Minutes of December 15 2016
It was moved by Commissioner Brink, seconded by Commissioner L. Shimmin and carried on
roll call vote to approve the minutes.
AYES: Commissioners J. Shimmin, Brink, Fandry, Laczko, Lyle, Miller, and L. Shimmin
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None
2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Discussion of Arbor Day 2017
Laena Shakarian, Staff Liaison, stated that both the Tree City USA application and the Growth
Award application had been submitted. Ms. Shakarian also stated that the Arbor Day
Proclamation would be presented at the March 7, 2017 City Council Meeting.
b. Arbor Day Recognition — (Date TBD)
Ms. Shakarian discussed creating an Arbor Day Subcommittee and explained the
subcommittee would meet separately to plan the Arbor Day recognition event. Chairperson J.
Shimmin described some past Arbor Day recognition events. Commissioner Miller suggested
replanting of trees on a street that had lost many trees in the 2011 windstorm. Ms. Shakarian
commented that the City's arborist, Dave Thompson, will be invited to the first Arbor Day
Subcommittee meeting in order to help answer tree -related questions.
It was moved by Commissioner Brink to form the Arbor Day Subcommittee, seconded by L.
Shimmin. Commissioners Fandry, Miller and L. Shimmin volunteered to serve on the Arbor Day
Subcommittee.

3. DISCUSSION OF 2017 SPRING HOME AWARDS
a. Assignment of individual judging zones
b. Start of individual judging (Date: Monday, April 24, 2017)
c. Group judging starting at 10:00 a.m. — (Date: Thursday, May 11, 2017)
d. Awards presentation at City Council Meeting — (Date: Tuesday, June 6, 2017)
Ms. Shakarian stated that judging zones will be assigned to each commissioner, with each
commissioner nominating five properties to include homes, condos, and/or businesses. Ms.
Shakarian stated that she will provide judging criteria to the Commission. Commissioner Miller
asked if there is a master calendar with important Arcadia Beautiful Commission dates listed.
Ms. Shakarian stated that she will provide dates as they are confirmed, and that events typically
take place around the same time each year.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Shimmin adjourned this meeting at 6:46 p.m. to April 13, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.
