ARCADIA BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES
THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2018
ARCADIA BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Shimmin called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm Council
Chambers Conference Room.
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Jan Shimmin, Sheryl Hunter, Ethel Laczko, Barbara Lyle, Robert Miller,
Lee Shimmin
ABSENT: Burton Brink
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS -None.
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS — None.
REPORT FROM ARCADIA CITY COUNCIL LIAISON- Council Liaison Tay stated that all
commissioners should be aware of which voting District they reside in, and that only Districts 2,
3 and 5 have a Council seat available for the upcoming election. Commissioner Miller stated
that the Arcadia Beautiful Commission should be involved with the Historical Preservation
efforts. Commissioner L. Shimmin asked if Commissioners could report Code Enforcement
violations noted while judging properties for the Spring Home Awards. Council Liaison Tay
responded that the Code Enforcement officers are responsible for noting code violations in the
community. Laena Shakarian, Staff Liaison, said she would be happy to report any noted code
violations to our Code Enforcement staff for follow-up.
REPORTS FROM ARCADIA BEAUTIFUL COMMISSIONERS- Commissioner Laczko thanked
Ms. Shakarian for her work on the Holiday Decoration Awards event. Commissioner Laczko
requested additional space for announcing award winners in future publications. Ms. Shakarian
responded that there is a limited amount of space for content, but that she would try to
accommodate this request in the future.
2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Meeting Minutes of December 14, 2018
It was moved by Commissioner L. Shimmin, seconded by Commissioner Lyle and carried on roll
call vote to approve the minutes.
AYES: Commissioners J. Shimmin, Hunter, Laczko, Lyle, Miller, & L. Shimmin.
NOES: None
ABSENT: Brink
3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Discussion of Arbor Day 2018
Commissioner J. Shimmin stated that the Commission may consider forming an Arbor Day
Subcommittee similar to last year. Commissioner L. Shimmin, Commissioner Miller, and
Commissioner Hunter volunteered to form the Arbor Day Subcommittee. Commissioner Laczko
asked if the Commission could partner with the Arboretum to help coordinate the Arbor Day
event. Ms. Shakarian stated that this will be discussed at the Arbor Day Subcommittee meeting.
Commissioner Miller asked if there are any specific locations in Arcadia that should have
additional trees. Council Liaison Tay said he doesn't recall any locations. Commissioner J.
Shimmin thanked the three Commissioners who volunteered to form the Subcommittee.
b. Discussion of 2018 Spring Home Awards
Commissioner J. Shimmin explained that the Commissioners would be assigned an area to
judge for the Spring Home Awards at the April 12 Arcadia Beautiful Commission meeting.
Commissioner J. Shimmin explained that individual judging will begin on Monday, April 23,
2018.
