HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 05/04/16MUSEUM COMMISSION XEGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, MAY 4y 2016 CALL TO ORDER — Chair Carter called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. in the Museum Education Center. ROLL CALL: Commissioners Dale Carter, Victor Wu, Donna Lee, Virginia Blitz, Carlos Reza, Jr., Director of Library & Museum Services Mary Beth Hayes, Curator Dana Hicks, Library Services Manager Roger Hiles. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Lee reported that she attended the Tony Antista exhibit opening at the Museum, and also that she has been trained to staff the Museum front desk. Commissioner Wu reported that the Arcadia Museum Foundation had not met since the last Museum Commission meeting. Commissioner Blitz stated that she had also attended the Tony Antista exhibit opening as well as the April Lunchtime Talk and the April 23 Spring Soiree. She said that she had in particular enjoyed the behind -the -scenes tour of the Museum. Commissioner Blitz added that the Friends of the Arcadia Museum would be meeting next Wednesday and are working on organizing and combining mailing lists. Commissioner Reza reported that he had attended the City's Silver Circle dinner honoring volunteers. DIRECTOR REPORTS A. Report from the Director: Director Hayes reported that City Council member Roger Chandler would be the Council liaison to the Museum Commission. She stated that work on the City budget was proceeding, and that Museum Commissioners were welcome to attend the two City budget study sessions being held on May 17 and May 25. The budget is expected to go to the Council for a vote on June 7. Director Hayes added that the Museum budget proposal contained minimal changes from last year. The Museum's capital improvement proposal included requests for money for a display case for the new Lucky Baldwin artifacts, a gallery hanging system that would speed up exhibit setup, a new laptop computer, and some new LED lighting. Director Hayes reported that the Museum Education Coordinator position had been filled, and that Rebecca Wilcox will be starting on May 17. She also said that staff reports had been prepared for the Council to approve accepting the donation of $13,050 from the Arcadia Museum Foundation for the lifelike figure of Lucky Baldwin as well as a separate donation of $1,575 from the Friends of the Arcadia Museum to purchase period -appropriate clothing and hat. ' B. Report from the Curator: Curator Hicks reported on successful school programs. One third grade class at Barnhart School sent thank you notes after their tour, which the Curator showed to the Commission. She also reported that the second Spring Soiree of the year will be held on May 7 and will include musician/storyteller, Eric Cyrs, playing an African instrument called the kora. Henna artist Jonathan Baker will also be in attendance to create henna art for guests. Curator Hicks noted that the juried photography contest has received 11 submissions so far. She also stated that a new exhibit is being set up to highlight the military memorabilia and service of Arcadia City Clerk Gene Glasco, president of the Arcadia Vietnam War Monument Foundation and speaker for the Museum's Lunchtime Talk on May 19. Curator Hicks added that another "Ask the Curator: Preserving Your Family Treasures" would be held on Saturday, May 21. Finally, she gave an update on four adult volunteers in Collections that have been trained to assist the Museum with artifact accession and preservation. C. Updates on Gillb Museum 15 th Anniversary, October 2016: Curator Hicks reported that preparations continue for this event. The Museum Foundation will have their regular meeting on May 11, when they will give the Curator updates on the process for the annual dinner. The Foundation's dinner this year will also include a celebration of the Museum's anniversary. a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of January 6, 2016 Recommended action: Approve Approval of Consent Calendar Item "a" was moved by Commissioner Lee, seconded by Commissioner Blitz, and carried on a voice vote.
