HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 05/03/17CALL TO ORDER — Chair Dale Carter called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. at the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. ROLL CALL — Commissioners Dale Carter, Virginia Blitz, Carlos Reza Jr, Victor Wu, Director Darlene Bradley, Curator Dana Hicks, and Museum Education Coordinator Rebecca Wilcox Approval of an excused absence for Commissioner Lee was moved by Commissioner Reza, seconded by Commissioner Blitz, and carried on a voice vote. AYES: Commissioners Carter, Blitz, Reza, and Wu NOES None PUBLIC COMMENTS Billie Tone shared that she delivered two boxes of archival material from the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to the Museum. She is excited to have the history in a place that will be safe and accessible to the public. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Blitz, liaison to the Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) announced that on June 24, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., FAM will be hosting their annual meeting. Commissioner Blitz extended an invitation to all Commissioners. DIRECTOR REPORTS A. Reports from the Director: Director Bradley shared that she attended the Day of Memory in March, the Spring Soiree in. April, and the FAM ribbon cutting event. Director Bradley also noted that she is nearing the end of budget season. All budget numbers have been prepared to be presented to City Council for their approval. Director Bradley will be bringing forth the idea of instituting passport services at the Library in order to generate more revenue for the City. Lastly, she shared that she had recently attended the city-wide emergency operations training drill. This training is essential to ensure that the city and employees are prepared and able to trouble -shoot various emergency scenarios. B. Reports from the Curator: Curator Hicks noted the current exhibit, "Heart and Soul: the Art of Kathryn Hansen", will be on view until June 24, 2017. The next Soiree will be May 20, 2017, and will feature artist Kathryn Hansen, the sidewalk astronomers, and a hammered dulcimer player. The FAM celebrated their fourth anniversary with a, ribbon cutting hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. The Museum hosted another Photo Identification Team meeting on April 20, with 15 attendees, three of which were new to the team. This program is helpful in organizing photographs, identifying people and/or locations, future research, and gaining new Museum volunteers. Curator Hicks will be leading a training session for all volunteers in collections in May. The Museum will be hosting the annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast next week on Saturday May 13. Curator Hicks extended an invitation to all Commissioners. May 9, 2017 the Rotary will honor the President of the FAM and Museum volunteer, Joyce Platt, as Arcadia's Senior Citizen of the Year. Curator Hicks shared that she is currently working with a high school volunteer on an oral history project that will feature Arcadian immigrants. Whitney Jacobs, collections volunteer, is continuing work on the preservation of the Riyo Sato collection and will be complete by the end of May. Nelle But , ler, member of the public who attended the March 1 Museum Commission meeting, donated a FAM membership as a token of appreciation. FAM has selected regular visitor to the Museum, Luis Bayro'n. Lastly, Curator Hicks. asked the Commissioners for feedback regarding the April 4 visit to the Riverside Metropolitan Museum, discussion ensued. Coordinator Wilcox shared her success in using the public school flyer distribution service, Peachjar, in increasing attendance to family programs. On March 18 the Museum hosted the Up Close and Messy family program about batik dyeing with over 80 people in attendance. On March 29 Coordinator Wilcox facilitated a third grade field trip from Barnhart Elementary. The April 22 Arcadia Earth Day Celebration was a great success with over 100 people in attendance and a special live animal presentation by The Critter Squad. Currently, Coordinator Wilcox is planning for the Camino Grove Elementary Community Day, the Arcadia Firefighter's Association Pancake Breakfast, a pre-school field trip, three third grade outreach programs, and the next Hands On Saturday for Families on June 3. C. Sign thank -you letter to Riverside Metropolitan Museum for off-site tour D. Discussion on AASLH StEPs program, section 2: Audience: Curator Hicks shared a presentation overview of the StEPs program and section 2, followed by discussion. CONSENT CALENDAR a.
