HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 07/05/17MUSEUM COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, July 5, 2017 CALL TO ORDER — Chair Dale Carter called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. at the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Lee ROLL CALL - Commissioners Dale Carter, Virginia Blitz, Victor Wu, Donna Lee, Director Darlene Bradley, Curator Dana Hicks, and Museum Education Coordinator Rebecca Wilcox ABSENT- Carlos Reza Jr. Approval of an excused absence for Commissioner Reza was moved by Commissioner Blitz, seconded by Commissioner Lee, and carried on a voice vote. AYES- Commissioners Carter, Blitz, Lee, and Wu NOES None PUBLIC COMMENTS: Monica Sanchez, reporter for Arcadia Weekly, noted she was eager to learn more about the 9th Annual Juried Photography Exhibit. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Blitz, liaison to the Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM), reported that. the Friends of the Arcadia Museum's general membership meeting was a great success. She again expressed the gratitude of the FAM to Commissioner Carter for his well-received lecture. ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND APPOINTMENT OF LIAISONS Chairperson: Nomination of Commissioner Carter was moved by Commissioner Blitz, seconded by Commissioner Wu, and carried on a voice vote. AYES: Commissioners Lee, Wu, Blitz, and Carter NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Reza Chair Pro Tempore: Nomination of Commissioner Lee was moved by Commissioner Wu, seconded by Commissioner Carter, and carried on a voice vote. AYES: Commissioners Blitz, Wu, Lee, and Carter. NOES: None. AYES: Commissioner Blitz, Wu, Carter, and Lee. NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Reza DIRECTOR REPORTS I A. Reports from the Director: Director Bradley invited the Commissioners to join the City as the Museum Education Center is officially renamed the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center on August 1, from 4:30-5:30pm. Director Bradley also reported on the installation and near -completion of the new Museum monument sign. She also noted that the Library and Museum fiscal year 2017-18 budgets were approved and passed by City Council. B. Reports from the Curator: Curator Hicks reported on the 9th Annual Juried Photography Contest and Exhibition, which she is in the process of hanging and will open on July 8. New exhibits have also been installed in City Hall and City Council Chambers display cases, featuring artwork of Yolanda Hu and an exhibit on the Peach Blossom Parade and Festivals 1949-1951, respectively. .:`Curator Hicks invited the Commissioners to the upcoming Arcadia at the Movies program featuring "Seabiscuit" with Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges on July 22 and "The Lemon Drop Kid," featuring Bob Hope on August 19. Lastly, Curator Hicks reported that the Friends of the Arcadia Museum will be presenting a check to the City Council on the August 1 in the amount of $8,585.00. This donation is from the proceeds of the Museum Foundation's annual dinner in 2016. Education Coordinator Wilcox has been spending the summer preparing for the new school year and upcoming family programs. She has also been working with a local artist to develop history -based coloring pages inspired by the Museum's photograph collection. Coordinator Wilcox shared that the upcoming program, Arcadia Dance Day on August 5, is being presented by local Girl Scout Cadette and Silver Award Candidate, Kathleen Wijaya. C. American Association for State and Local History StEPs program, section 2: Audience: Curator Hicks shared a presentation overview of the StEPs program and section 2, which poses the first self-assessment question, "does the institution actively collect information about current and potential visitors?" Curator Hicks demonstrated how the Museum meets the basic performance indicator by collecting numeric information about current attendance. Discussion ensued on how to clarify the data already collected. Museum staff will further discuss the topic and present additional information at the next Commission meeting. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of May 3, 2017 Recommended action: Approve Approval of Consent Calendar Item "a" was moved by Commissioner Blitz, seconded by Commissioner Wu, and carried on a voice vote.
