HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 01/03/18MUSEUM COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, January 3, 2018 CALL TO ORDER — Chair Carter called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. at the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. 'kOLL CALL Commissioners Dale Carter, Wictor Virginia Blitz, Carlos Reza, Jr, T Darlene Bradley, Curator Dana Hicks, and Museum Education Coordinator Rebecca Wilcox ABSENT: Commissioner Donna Lee Approval of an excused absence for Commissioner Lee was moved by Commissioner Wu, seconded by Commissioner Blitz, and carried on a voice vote. AYES: Commissioners Carter, Reza, Blitz, And Wu. NOES: None. PUBLIC COMMENTS: Billie Tone wished everyone a happy new year and noted that she was already excited for the upcoming exhibit, Home on the Range: Rancho Owners of Santa Anita and the movies planned for this summer. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Reza attended the annual marionette show in December and noted that it was a great success and he was grateful to staff for organizing a wonderful family program. Commissioner Blitz, as liaison to the Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM), informed the Commission of the first fundraiser spearheaded by FAM: selling hot chocolate at the Annual Marionette Show. FAM also assisted Museum staff during the marionette show by watching the museum's front desk and distributing tickets for the shows. Chair Carter shared with the Commission that the Arboretum will be hosting a program featuring early Baldwin photographs on January 7, 2018. Chair Carter also shared that he was able to attend the marionette show and he thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Lastly, Chair Carter shared that a descendant of Lucky Baldwin visited the Arboretum and was encouraged to visit the Gilb Museum. DIRECTOR REPORTS A. Reports from the Director: Director Bradley reported that the new Library Services Manager, Pat Smith, will be attending the next Commission meeting. Director Bradley is celebrating her first anniversary as Director of Library and Museum Services. Over this year, one of her main goals was to be present in the community and meet with community members on behalf of the Library and the Museum. Director Bradley is looking forward to the coming year's programs and working with Museum staff and the Commission to continue to enhance the Museum's presence in the community. B. Reports from the Curator: Curator Hicks reviewed the new 2018 Museum calendar with the Commission. She reported that the next exhibit, Home on the Range: Rancho Owners of Santa Anita will open January 13, 2018. The Museum's website was updated and now reflects all of the programs for the 2018 year. Curator Hicks also noted that the Museum now has a YouTube channel that currently has six past Lunchtime Talks available for viewing and the channel will continue to be updated with new content. Capital Improvement Projects for 2018 are already underway: the Museum's back gallery and wall in the collection area are being painted, the Museum will receive new street banners soon, and the Museum patio will also be painted along with having the wood slats around the Museum cleaned and polished. Lastly, Curator Hicks noted that the Museum moved up to number 11 on TripAdvisor's "Top Things to do in Arcadia." Education Coordinator Wilcox noted that the annual marionette show was a great success with two sold -out shows. She also led the first Museum Youth Council meeting of the year, with her select group of Young Adult Volunteers assisting in planning the January Hands on Saturday for Families event. Coordinator Wilcox hosted a Cub Scout program earning the Looking Forward, Looking Back badge. She is looking forward to another Kathy Kredel preschool program and adult English as Second Language program with the Church of Transfiguration at the end of January. Coordinator Wilcox is also looking forward to attending the California Association of Museum's conference in Palm Springs in February. C.
