HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 05/02/18.MUSEUM COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, May 2,2018 CALL TO ORDER — Chair Carter called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. at the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. Dale ROLL CALL --Commissioners uale Carter, Virginia Blitz, Victor Wu, Carlos Reza Jr., Director Darlene Bradley, Curator Dana Hicks, and Museum Education Coordinator Rebecca Wilcox ABSENT: Commissioner Lee REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS I LIAISONS Commissioner Carter shared that he attended the Photograph Identification Team's annual meeting and was able to see the new Sid Bingham exhibit. He also noted that he will be giving a talk to the Coordinating Council about "Hollywood at the Arboretum" and is excited to share the information for the "Arcadia at the Movies" program with the audience. Commissioner Blitz noted that she was able to attend the City's Silver Circle Dinner, helped with the Sid Bingham exhibit opening, the first "Spring Soiree," and also attended the Photograph Identification Team's annual meeting. As liaison to the Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM), Commissioner Blitz shared that FAM is continuing with their membership drive and met in April to address and mail membership information. DIRECTOR REPORTS A. Reports from the Director: Director Bradley shared that she also addressed the Coordinating Council in early April with a presentation about the Museum. Director Bradley informed the Commission about her current project to facilitate discussion about arts and culture in the Arcadia community, which will be held May 12, 2018. Along with this, Director Bradley updated the Commission on the progression of the Museum's budget for the fiscal year 2018-2019. B. Reports from the Curator and Education Coordinator: Curator Hicks noted that the temporary exhibit, "Here and There: Artwork of Sid Bingham," will close June 2. The next temporary exhibit will be the "10th Annual Arcadia Juried Photography Contest and Exhibition" and will open June 16. Curator Hicks informed the Commission about the success of the annual "Volunteers in Collections Workshop," which allows all the volunteers in collections to learn and grow together. The Photo Identification Team met April 18 with new photos that have been donated and purchased for the collection. The first "Spring Soiree" of the year, featuring the Side Walk Astronomers, acoustic guitarist Mike Gallegos, and henna artist Jonathan Baker was held April 28 and had about 45 people in attendance, the most so far. The next Soiree will be May 26 and will feature henna artist Jonathan Baker and violinist Sara Jones. The Museum's History Symposium "Ross Field Arcadia WWI Balloon School — 100 Years" will be hosted on May 5, with a reception hosted by FAM. Education Coordinator Wilcox shared that she visited all the third grade students at Longley Way Elementary School March 14-16, to facilitate the "Arcadia: Then and Now" school program. "Hands -On Saturdays for Families" was held on March 24 and featured INCA: The Peruvian Ensemble. It was a great success. Coordinator Wilcox shared that this year's "Up Close and Messy" family program all about felt making processes was also well attended. Coordinator Wilcox informed the Commission that she is currently preparing to visit the first graders of Camino Grove for their annual Community Day on May 11; and is also working on the next "Hands -On Saturdays for Families: Exploring Croatia C. Discussion on American Association for State and Local History StEPs program, section 2: Audience: Curator Hicks shared that Museum staff distributed a- visitor survey to the Museum's email mailing list. Curator Hicks also posted maps in the Museum lobby to gather visitor geographic information. Both the visitor survey and the maps were shared with the Commissioners. Curator Hicks presented more information and data that Museum staff have gathered regarding attendance and discussion ensued. Section 1A of the Audience Section was completed. D. 2018 Off -Site Museum tour to the Skirball Cultural Center: Commissioners were reminded that all who are able to attend the tour will meet at the Museum by 10:00 a.m. on June 19. Commissioners should plan on returning to the Gilb Museum around 3:00 p.m. E. Farewell to Victor Wu, final Commission meeting: Director Bradley presented Commissioner Wu with a certificate of appreciation for his eight years of service to the Museum and community. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of March 7, 2018 Recommended action: Approve Approval of Consent Calendar Item "a" was moved by Commissioner Blitz, seconded by Commissioner Carter, and carried on a voice vote. AYES: Commissioners Carter, Wu, Reza, and Blitz NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner Lee Adjournment: Chair Carter adjourned the meeting at 6:55 p.m. to the Special Meeting on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage at 380 W.
