REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, July 11, 2018
CALL TO ORDER — Chair Carter called the meeting to order at 5:00 P.m. -'at the Floretta K
Lauber Museum Education Center.
ROLL CALL — Commissioners Dale Carter, Billie Tone, JeanneCarlos RezaDirector
Darlene Bradley, Library Services Manager Roger Hiles, Curator Dana Hicks,
and Museum Education Coordinator Rebecca Wilcox
Approval of an excused absence for Commissioner Blitz was moved by Commissioner Tone,
seconded by Commissioner Roy, and carried on a voice vote.

REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS
Commissioner Carter began by welcoming new Commissioners Tone and Roy. He also shared
that while visiting the Balboa Island Museum he met and talked with the first paid director about
the struggles of managing a small museum and its collection. Chair Carter shared that he
became involved with the Gilb Museum after serving as a docent at the LA County Arboretum
and learning more about Arcadia's local history. Commissioner Tone stated that she is very
excited to be working with the commission because she has always had a love of history and
wanted to find a way to be more involved with the Museum and her community's local history.
Commissioner Roy noted that she attended the City's first Leadership Academy and has wanted
to become more involved in the city for a while and the timing was finally right. She has an
interest in museums and libraries and is looking forward to learning more. Commissioner Reza
shared that he is now serving his second year on the Museum's commission. He enjoys the
discussions and is looking forward to participating and learning with the new commissioners.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND APPOINTMENT OF LIAISONS
Postponement of the election of officers and appointment of liaisons was moved by
Commissioner Tone, seconded by Commissioner Roy, and carried on a voice vote.

DIRECTOR REPORTS
A. Reports from the Director: Director Bradley shared that the budget for the museum and
library has passed and the new fiscal year is under way. A few of the Capital Improvement
Projects (CIP) that the Museum will be working on this year include: lighting the front steps
of the Museum, enclosing the collections storage area, a new computer with collections
software in the collections area for artifact processing, and a media upgrade to the
Museum's Past Perfect collections management program. The Public Works department will
soon complete a previous CIP project to upgrade the Museum's lighting to LED lamps. The
Museum will be the first building in the city that is lit completely with LED lighting, saving on
energy bills and helping to protect the artifacts in the Museum's collection. Director Bradley
also welcomed the Museum's new Commissioners and briefly shared information about how
to be an advocate for the Museum, as the Commission serves as the eyes and ears of the
Museum for City Council.
B. Reports from the Curator and Education Coordinator: Curator Hicks noted that the
temporary exhibit, 10h Annual Arcadia Juried Photography Contest and Exhibition is
currently on view. The theme this year was, "After Dark: Night Photography," and the theme
for next year is, "Social Issues: Through Your Eyes". The Arcadia Veteran's Local History
Room also opened a new exhibit featuring the story of Dr. Richard Cordano, with a fabulous
opening with over 50 attendees. Curator Hicks also shared that she installed the Ross Field
Arcadia WWI Balloon School, 100 Years exhibit in the City Council Chambers display case
and will soon install the Home on the Range: Rancho Owners of Santa Anita in the City Hall
display case. Curator Hicks invited Commissioners to two upcoming Museum programs:
Arcadia at the Movies featuring film historian and local Arcadia resident, Annick Downhbwer
discussing A Star is Born on July 21 and Malaya on August 18. Education Coordinator
Wilcox shared that she visited the first graders of Camino Grove for their annual Community
Day on May 11. On May 25 the "Hands -On Saturdays for Families: Exploring Croatia" was a
great success with delicious Croatian food catered by Cafe LuMar. The Scrapbooking
Program has gained several new attendees and now has a great group of regulars to share
ideas and new techniques with one another while reminiscing. Coordinator Wilcox attended
the Arcadia Unified annual "Innovation Summit" in June to learn more about what is
happening with education in Arcadia. She shared the new "School and Scout Programs"
brochure and will present more information about the addition to the school programs at the
September meeting.
C. Discussion on American Association for State and Local History StEPs program,
section 2: Audience: Curator Hicks shared that Museum staff distributed a visitor survey to
the Museum's Facebook audience and received four more responses. Curator Hicks will
send the survey to the email mailing list again in the fall and will report back. The
Commission reviewed Audience section 1 B. Curator Hicks will assess the Museum with
Director Bradley and Coordinator Wilcox and will report back at the September meeting.
D. 2018 Off -Site Museum tour to the Skirball Cultural Center: Commissioners signed a
thank you note for the tour of the Skirball Cultural Center.
E. Group Photograph: The group photograph was postponed until the September commission
meeting.
