HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 09/05/18MUSEUM COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, September 5, 2018 CALL TO ORDER — Chair Carter called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. at the Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center. .M Billie Tone Jeanne Roy, Carlos Reza Jr., Virgini --XOLL CALL — Commissioners Dale Carter, 7 Blitz, Director Darlene Bradley, Curator Dana Hicks, and Museum Educatio Coordinator Rebecca Wilcox I LATE - Commissioner Tone arrived at 5:30 p.m. PUBLIC COMMENTS: Matthew Rooney, son of Curator Hicks, introduced himself as an archaeologist, soon-to-be PhD candidate at Florida State University, and employee at the Florida State Museum working with the Chickasaw tribe. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Carter began by sharing that he assisted Commissioner Blitz and Curator Hicks at the Arcadia at the Movies program and he is looking forward to speaking about museum events at the next City Council meeting. Commissioner Blitz also commented on the Arcadia at the Movies event and detailed a project that the Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) is working on with the Santa Anita chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in order to submit a grant application. This grant would fund the digitization of the Arcadia Veteran's Registry and installation of a touchscreen that would allow visitors to browse through the records more easily and efficiently. Commissioner Blitz also shared that FAM will be donating $2,500 to the Museum at the October 2, 2018 City Council meeting. This donation will fund a touchscreen for the WWI Balloon School section of the permanent gallery and will allow visitors to examine more of the photographs from that period. Commissioners Roy and Tone noted that they were pleased to attend a private tour of the Museum and orientation prior to the commission meeting. ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND APPOINTMENT OF LIAISONS Chairperson: Nomination of Commissioner Reza was moved by Commissioner Roy, seconded by Commissioner Blitz, and carried on a voice vote. AYES: Commissioners Reza, Roy, Blitz, and Carter. NOES: None. AYES: Commissioner Reza, Roy, Blitz, and Carter. NOES: None. ABSENT: Commissioner Tone DIRECTOR REPORTS A. Reports from the Director: Director Bradley thanked Commissioner Carter for his service as Commission Chair for the last year and congratulated the new officers. She shared that the Arcadia Historical Society will be unveiling a new History Lives Were marker at the Los Angeles Arboretum on September 13, 2018 at 5:00 pm. She noted that the Museum does support this program by providing $500 for the cost of the marker. Director Bradley also noted that the City's Leadership Academy will start this month, with the Library and Museum Department's presentation on October 24, 2018. Director Bradley shared that she attended the installment event of new officers for the Arcadia Chinese Association and the open house for the Arcadia Woman's Club, which installed the city's first water fountain and founded the Arcadia Public Library. B. Reports from the Curator and Education Coordinator: Curator Hicks reported that the 10th Annual Photography Contest and Exhibition has now closed. The theme for the 2019 contest and exhibition is Social Issues: Through Your Eyes. The next exhibit will be Lines in Arcadia featuring the photography of Jenny Fung. This exhibit will open on September 15, with an opening reception from 1:00-3:00pm. The current exhibit in the research library features artwork by local artists. One of the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) includes the purchase of a new exhibit case for the research library to assist in displaying archival materials. Curator Hicks also shared that Commissioners Roy and Tone each came in for new commissioner tours of the Museum and Curator Hicks notified the remaining Commissioners that she will be inviting them in individually for their own tours of the Museum. This will be offered annually to ensure Commissioners are updated on the exhibits, collections and programming. Curator Hicks then invited Commissioners to attend upcoming Museum events including: the Young Adult Welcome Breakfast on September 22 at 10:00am; monthly Scrapbooking Studio on September 7, October 5, and November 2 from 1:30-3:30pm; the Friends of the Arcadia Museum Annual Membership Meeting on, October 6 at 10:00am; Hands on Saturdays for Families: Navigating Nepal on October 13 from 10:00am-12:00pm; Annual Open House for City Employees on October 19 from 1:30- 3:30pm; and the Museum's First Annual Anniversary Open House on October 20, all day. Lastly, Curator Hicks informed the commission of the status of the development of the 2019 Museum calendar, which will be completed and presented to the commission at the November meeting. Education Coordinator Wilcox shared that she hosted the Royal Oaks retirement home for a tour and activity and the pre -K class from Kathy Kredel School in July. C. Education Coordinator presentation, new school program: Museum in a Box Coordinator Wilcox shared the Google website and Google Drive folder that she created for the teachers and students of Arcadia Unified School District. She detailed the items within the traveling "museum in a box" and explained how the artifacts, website, and Google Drive folder can be used by Arcadia teachers within their classrooms. D. Update on American Association for State and Local History StEPs program, section 2: Audience: Curator Hicks reviewed the steps taken thus far and prepped them for the upcoming section's questions and assessments. E. Annual Report.- Curator Hicks reviewed highlights of the 2017-18 annual report. Discussion ensued. F. Group Photograph,-, Group photograph with new commissioners was taken inside the Museum.
